Living Large On A Small Budget

Save some green with these simple money saving ideas!  Whether you want to go on a vacation, buy a house, or enjoy a comfortable retirement, you've got to learn to save money.

How much is in your emergency fund? Connect with other frugal consumers, get valuable money saving tips, or ideas for simple living.  Discuss topics like Online Bargains, Your Debt, find the best freebies, or swap coupons.

Reason For Resourcefulness:  Waste Not, Want Not.  You may be familiar with this phrase if you had a parent or grandparent who lived through the great depression or experienced war rationing.  Prior generations, mainly out of necessity, demonstrated that philosophy numerous ways and learned to be resourceful with what they had.   In today's world of abundance, why would anyone choose to live that way?  I'll give you a few good reasons.

You tap into your creative side when you have to make do with what you have. It forces you to look at what you have in a new light. You're forced to use your imagination, giving you insight into something's hidden potential.  You'll also experience a deeper level of satisfaction when creating something out of nothing. There's another great byproduct:  you save lots of money!

Imagination and creativity are both traits that everyone has; whether they think they do or not.  Like with most skills, they get better with practice.  Unfortunately, the "quick fix" of being able to run out to the store to buy whatever we need can smother our resourcefulness.   The best way to get back in touch with your creative side is to put it into practice each and every day.  Once honed, this skill can apply it to other areas of your life: your career, your hobbies, and even your relationships.

The next time you find yourself running to the store to buy a piece of clothing, a toy to keep your kids entertained or something with which to decorate your home, try re-thinking about using what you already have.  Not only will you have extra cash in your wallet, you'll be putting that great skill into practice.

Tip: Learn from the mistakes of others, because you can't live long enough to make them all yourself!

Ain't It a Gas? Fuel Price Finder

Gas prices are causing more agita than the hot dogs sold inside the stations. Not to mention trying to find the least expensive fuel in town is a pain in the butt, just like eating said wieners. As for driving around looking for cheapo gas, you might as well drive a Hummer to go visit Ed Begley Jr.

Until it is time to hit the voting booth I'm "giving the finger" to random gas-hogs on my daily commute (along with slow pokes in the fast-lane, Winnebago drivers during rush hour, and your grandparents.)

On a more productive note, I am going to start checking out AAA's (that is the Automobile Association of America cave-dwellers) Fuel Price Finder for the cheapest pumps in my neighborhood and their Fuel Cost Calculator to budget for longer trips. Yes, there are other sites with the similar features, but I find these two streamlined and easy to navigate. If anything you'll save yourself a bit of grief, and a bit of heartburn.

Note: If you're feeling wistful about the gas prices of yore, check out the Vintage Gas Station Museum.

Saving On Gas

When I moved to back to Chicago in the spring of 1989, I was paying around $1.40/gallon. Not so long ago, the price of mid-grade was double that, although now I'm paying around $2.80/gallon for my fuel. So, I decided to reduce my costs and look into ways to spend less at the pump. I found a lot of tips, plus a link to a 96-page ebook that I'll share with you at the end of this article.

Now, as I soon discovered, there are literally hundreds of ways to chop a penny or two here and there. Way too many to list here. But I'm a big fan of Top 10 lists, so here's mine. Once again, no particular order here folks.

Top 10 Ways To Save On Gas

According to recent Reuter's report, despite oil prices hovering around $70.85 a barrel, consumers can expect a continued Rise in the price per gallon they'll have to pay to fill up their fuel tanks ...

1: Fill up in the evenings

Believe it or not, the pumps deliver a little more gas per dollar when the temperatures are lower. If you follow that logic, right now in Chicago I should be getting more bang for my buck than you folks in sunny L.A.

2: Topping-off short-changes you

It's something a lot of us do, because we don't want to be driving anywhere without a decent amount in the tank. But, when you only put a small amount of gas in your car, the pump doesn't get a chance to fully activate. In the long run, topping off can add several cents to the cost of a gallon of gas.

3: Follow the crowd - find busy gas stations

It seems an odd statement, right? Normally, I'm all against waiting any longer than I have to. But, the busy stations have fresher fuel, because their tanks are constantly being refilled. And that gives you more power from your gas than the fuel you'd find at those slow stations, which has been gradually contaminated by sitting for months and months in the pit.

4: Shopping around can save you mucho buckeroos

On one street in my neighborhood, the cost of regular differed by 20 cents between three different stations. For a 20 gallon tank, that's a $4 difference. Multiply that by 24 (that's how many times I have to fill up per year ... I'm lucky I work at home) and that's almost $100 saved per year, just by driving an extra 2 minutes. It all adds up. To find gas savings nearby, try GasPriceWatch or GasBuddy.

5: Always keep your tires at the correct pressure

It's a pain to keep checking them, but under-inflated tires take more power to roll. More power = more gas = more cost. The correct tire pressure is printed on the tire itself, it's usually around 32psi but check your own tires to make sure. And you could always try replacing your current tires with Low Rolling Resistance tires (LLR...a lot of Hybrids have them now) to further improve gas mileage.

6: Only buy the grade you need

I put mid-grade in my car because the manual recommends it. I drive an import. But my husband's car is a Mercury and the manual says that 85 is perfectly fine. And you only really need that premium gas if you're driving some kind of super-machine (a Porsche is not in my future any time soon). So, unless you want that extra cost for some kind of status symbol, keep it real.

7: Turn that gas cap

You're not going to break it by turning it a few clicks. A tight gas cap prevents fuel from evaporating, and that could save you a lot of money over the year. Another way to prevent evaporation is to park in the shade.

8: Use A/C when you need it

Air-conditioning and climate-control puts a big strain on your gas consumption. If it's cooler outside, roll down a window. Alternate between the A/C and the fan in the summer months. The cool air circulating in your car will take a while to heat up. I know, I know, it's an annoying way to save money. But it does work.

9: Never take the car to empty

It's good advice for many reasons. After all, who wants to run out of gas on the side of some creepy highway at midnight? (I've seen way to many horror movies). But, when it comes to gas consumption, you use more gas when the tank is almost empty. Your vehicle runs less efficiently as it tries to speed up and slow down in the mornal fashion. Ideally, fill your tank when it's around 1/4 full.

10: Weekends are pricier than weekdays

Not all the time, but most of the time. Due to increased leisure driving over the weekends, the gas prices rise to meet demand. The best times to get your gas are Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings.

I could go on and on, but these are my top 10 and they're easy enough to remember. If you really want to take this gas-saving business to the next level, I can highly recommend an ebook I recently read called "How To Save At The Pump: 62 Ways" by Fred Greenwald. It's usually around $7 in paperback, but I found a link to a free ebook version here. You'll have to give them the usual name and email address info, but skip the part about the credit card and hit the back button. You'll get to the link that lets you download the complete book for free.

Fine Dining on a Take-Out Budget

Are you looking for a first-rate meal on a take-out budget? Head over to your local culinary school for a great meal at a low price.

Nearly all culinary schools have student-run restaurants, which are opened to the public practically every day school is in session. Since the chefs are at the cutting edge of culinary science, the restaurants offer an innovative assortment of gourmet food at student friendly prices. In layman's terms, these restaurants offer terrific food at dirt cheap prices. Lunch at your local culinary school will set you back $6 or $7, and a three-course lunch at a nationally recognized school will cost $15-$20.

Culinary schools, however, aren't the only places to score a great meal with out breaking the bank. Most universities, colleges, and vocational schools with culinary or hospitality management programs also have student-run restaurants. Thanks to larger campus populations, these restaurants are typically open for a combination of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For example, at one large, Southern university, the student-run campus restaurant offers a full breakfast buffet for $5 and a three-course lunch (including drink) for $6.95. Every month, they also host a themed five-course dinner for $15.

If you're adventurous enough, culinary school meals are also a great way to enjoy fine dining while traveling abroad. When I lived in London, there was a world famous culinary school two blocks down the road from us. Every few weeks, we enjoyed a five course meal, with selected wines, for £10 (about $15 at the time).

More than likely, there are culinary schools or hospitality management programs with student-run restaurants in your area. Fire up your search engine or flip through your phone book to find them! Call them for hours and prices. Also, if you're looking for catering for a special event, some of the larger culinary and hospitality management programs offer catering services at drastically reduced prices.

How To Live Large On A Budget

All want to live high, irrespective of his/her low or high paychecks. Everyone loves to debate ideas, policies and principles about living large on a low budget. At the end of the day, they find themselves come down to priorities, far from living life king-size. The basics for all to live large on a budget, is to understand where their priorities lie. One must realize how much they are spending each month, what they are spending it on, and where they are getting it from.

Everybody usually practices three types of spending: Mandatory spending, Discretionary spending and Miscellaneous spending. Mandatory spending is based on the rules of law as various taxes and therefore fixed. Miscellanious spending may be unexpected expenditures as immediate visits to hospitals, break down of vehicles, lending loans to somebody (though it can be avoided.) or any other events like that. It is only through discretionary spending that anyone can plan how to live large on a low budget. Discretionary spending is rather flexible and we can plan their living in accordance with their remaining budget.

We are mostly confused while shopping gadgets. Every day there are new and improved versions of cell phones, computers, digital systems, and cameras at hot prices. All of them are very tempting, but mostly beyond budget. The good news is that the prices soon make a downward journey making it more affordable. Moreover there are many online comparison shops that provide good bargain options for the latest gadgets. So, If you are on the lookout for latest gadgets, go in for multi-purpose devices rather than buying separate gadgets.

[Budget Living] Today's men and women are in the same boat when it comes to selecting their clothes. With styles changing, it might not always be possible to go in for expensive designer clothes. The easiest method to appear in trendy attires with a low budget is off-season shopping. There will be retail markets of designer brands at the end of each season. An overall idea of the latest fashions and a good tailor may also fill your wardrobe with trendy attires at low prices.

Beauty care has attained immense importance in today's world. However the soaring bills at beauty parlors might not always be affordable. You can go in for a good beauty regime yourself with useful tips from various reliable sources, like beauty magazines, Internet sites, television et al. There are many inexpensive and regular home therapies, which are as good, and perhaps more effective than the ones in the parlors. More over doing your beauty therapy at home would mean use of more natural and organic stuff, which is an excellent treatment for the body and skin. In addition to that you can check out the local beauty parlors where you may get quality beauty care at a low price.

Not everybody can live themselves in regal manors. However, with a little effort you can make your apartments look like a million dollars home. Easy Do-it-yourself project tips will help to do home-renovations without the help of a contractor or decorator. The furnishings for the home can be adjusted in a low budget by getting discounts for the slightly used displays in the furniture stores. Moreover at the discount sales and auctions you will be able to pick up nice-looking furniture and other pieces of art for less.

Entertaining guests is an unavoidable social gesture. Consequently parties should be neither account breaking nor stumpy. You can host parties at home rather than expensive restaurants. This way you can save on the rent of restaurant halls and use the same on food and return gifts for the guests. Better still, if you are a good cook, dish up the delicacies at home. Give your guests a taste of your culinary skills. This will work out far lesser than caterers. If you have to take their guests out to the restaurant always try to entertain them with snacks or good drinks at home before setting out. That way, guests will enjoy the ambience of a good restaurant with light and inexpensive delicacies. Remember that living large on a budget means making small changes which will have far reaching effects on your pocket. You do not need a six-figure salary every month to live large. A classic taste for lifestyle and fashion with an eye for savings will change anybody's life to the paramount.

Top 5 Ways To Hustle Free Drinks

Here, you'll learn five great ways to hustle free drinks in your local bar or pub.

I must first point out that I'm in no way advocating con artists. Not at all. These are harmless pranks to play on good friends and co-workers. And dare I say it, you may even want to try them on family, maybe that weird uncle that never buys you a Birthday gift.

The main theme of all these hustles is something called a Propostion Bet. Basically, a proposition bet is a challenge which looks like it only has one outcome...and it does...it always favors the person placing the wager.

That's because you know something the other folks don't. You know the 'challenge' is always going to go your way. Always. A show in Britain called "The Real Hustle' does these bets often as a way to show you how much fun they can be, and also how to avoid getting caught out by them. So, here we go. My Top 5 free drink hustles, in no particular order.
