I think it's easier to let the marketing professionals do the work for you. These professionals are photo agencies who can sell your photography for you, and take a commission. Yes, splitting profits 50-50 with someone might sound like a bad idea, but think about it - they do all the marketing work for you, they aggressively promote their brands every single day and pay lots of money for advertisements. Having a portfolio on one or more such agencies is an excellent idea. And it's free.

Of course, there are many different photo agencies out there. Some of them like Getty or Corbis are not quite suitable for a beginner. But many other agencies are. Some of them will sell your photographs for 1 or 2 dollars, but you can sell the same photograph multiple times. And you don't even need hundreds of photos to begin. All you need is a couple of your best shots. Submit them online and that's it. An editor will approve or reject your photos. If approved your photos will appear on a photo agency site and be available to thousands of potential buyers. And that's much easier than selling photography at your own site.
