Physical CD sales are decreasing every year, because of online downloading. Not just illegal downloads either. On February 24th, 2010, iTunes reported it's 10 billionth song download. With more sales than people in the world, iTunes is the largest digital distributor in the world! Most artists feel intimidated, and think that they need to be signed to a big record label to get on it, but really it's pretty simple. In this article I will explain multiple ways to get your music on iTunes, and also give you some secondary digital distributors that you can start profiting from right away!

Distribute Directly With iTunes

It is possible for artists to send music directly to iTunes, for no charge. In order to do this, however, artists need to fulfill some requirements. They are: You need At least 20 albums in your catalog, UPCs/EANs/JANs for all products you intend to distribute, and ISRCs for all tracks you intend to distribute. UPCs/EANs/JANs are bar codes and unique product identification numbers that can be scanned in retail locations. Having one of these would allow your product to be sold in any retail music store as a download or a physical copy. They normally cost $89 per code. An ISRC code is an international standard code for uniquely identifying sound recordings and music video recordings. It would be difficult for independent artists to meet these requirements, so if you can't don't worry. There are more options to get your music on iTunes!

Don't Meet Apple's Requirements?

Don't worry! Most people use a 3rd party distributor to place their songs on iTunes. There is normally a small fee to place your songs, but it takes only a few sales to make this money back.
