There is a Right Way to Set Up Your Chess Board

The reason I want to share this is to share that there are reasons for chess rules. Without certain rules, you will not be able to play the game well. Knowing why we have them and why we need them is as important as learning what the rules are.

I had a Grandfather and a Mom who loved games, card games, board games, anything that had strategy to it. There were always the rules that had to be followed.

Now, through learning more about chess, I've come to understand why the rules are there and how to follow the rules to take advantage of the best ways to use strategy to win the board game.

Have you ever watched children, very young children, trying to imitate their parents in playing a particular game? They seem to make up their own rules and it is very comical to watch. I watched my children trying to figure out games and they caught on to the concept very quickly, but always had the idea that they had to win. I guess it was because they were in a world all about themselves.

I really enjoyed watching my children learn the new rules to games. I did encourage them to win and to expect to win - by playing the rules. Pretty soon, they were making sure I played the rules right! So, on to learning the basic rules of setting up your chess board correctly.

Easy Chess Board Set Up Steps

Color and Placement

Chess Board Set UpThe Chess board game traditionally is played black and white contrasting squares and chess pieces.
The chess board has 64 squares.
There are 16 chessmen on each side for a total of 32 chessmen. Remember Chess is math.
Before you place your chess pieces, make sure there is a white square on your right as you face the chessboard.

In the diagram above you are facing the opponent with the white square on your opponents right.

Place each King on the center square on opposite sides in the back row. That way the Kings face each other from opposite sides of the board.

The Queen is placed beside the King, so that there are 3 squares on either side of the royal pair in the back row. Remember the "rule of color". The "white" Queen is placed on the center white square and the "black" Queen is placed on the center black square in the back row of opposite sides. The Queens face each other.

There are 2 Bishops and they sit one on each side of the King and Queen on the back row.

The 2 Knights are placed next to the 2 Bishops in the back row.

The 2 Rooks are set on the back row at the outermost edges, next to the Knights.

Both of the Bishops, Knights and Rooks will have one piece on a white square and one on a black square.

There are eight white pawns and eight black pawns and they go in the 2nd horizontal row on the matching colored side.

Any contrasting color or identifying factor will work just great. For the purpose of learning the game, the chess pieces do not have to be black and white. Just make sure you can identify easily the opponent chess piece.

Now you are ready to play the game of chess!

Spotlight Review for Marble Chess Sets

Why Buy Marble this Holiday Season?

Marble is able to fit in with any decor. My favorite decor with marble is wood and stone. If you have a beautiful wood table you want to show off, this would look great on it.

Chess is a game that can be learned by anyone. It goes very well in a game room situation. It will fit well displayed on a table in the corner, or even in the middle of the room, set up to play. Depending on whether you want privacy to concentrate, or whether you need the encouragement of others around for competition, this chess set will fit in the room you need it to be in. Put it in the kitchen, dining room, game room, study - wherever you play chess.

The perfect gift for the season. I prefer marble chess sets because just their presence spells elegance. Marble gifts last forever, and the message that you send with it will last forever also.

I like this one because of the unique green frame that it has. I love the polished contrasting white and black chess pieces.

Useful information for a chess beginner. I haven't played for about 20 years and had forgotten which square the queen sat on, but the other positions are pretty easy to memorise.
