How To Set Up A Wedding Dessert Bar

Share Your Love for Treats

A newish trend at weddings is a dessert bar. This is a way to serve sweet treats and confections instead of or in addition to the wedding cake. You can make it as simple or as elaborate as you like. Guests can get up and help themselves, so you don't have to worry about having waitresses hovering around.

The allure of the dessert bar is that it allows you to have lots of little choices for guests to taste. Instead of serving heavy desserts one by one, offer light and tiny dessert selections that look pretty. Everyone will get to taste just what they want to.

Match Your Wedding Theme

Color, or Feel of the Theme

Image by Shauna Younge Dessert Tables on FlickrHave lots of different options at your dessert table. The theme of the table should match your entire wedding theme. If you went with a pink and white theme, you might want to have pink and white cupcakes, pink parfaits in glasses, strawberries dipped in white chocolate, etc.

Of course, the entire list of gourmet desserts doesn't have to match by color par say. But you should have a linen table cloth the same color as your wedding theme. And have a centerpiece, either edible or not, that reflects your theme as well.

What to Include

The Yummies

What you decide to include on your dessert bar is really up to you. You can go ultra upscale and have petit fours and decorated gourmet chocolates. Or you can go more casual and have Jell-O parfaits, fruit trifle, or cupcakes. Many brides choose to make a cupcake tower that resembles a wedding cake. Your caterer can do this for you by using stacked cake plates. Each tier will have its own selection of cupcakes and when viewed all together will look like a wedding cake.

Have fruits dipped in chocolate, a chocolate fountain, tiny wedding cakes that each guest can pick up and take back to their seat, or ice cream, cheesecake, sorbet, or chocolate mousse. You might even do elegant candy bon bons on sticks or home made lollipops.

The wedding cake can be your centerpiece, or you can opt not to have a cake and just have the desserts.

When it's time to open the dessert bar, the catering staff will wheel it out to the area you choose. Guests will know it's time to help themselves.

If no one goes up, send your best friend or groomsmen up to start the line. Guests will be sure to follow.

Things Guests Love

Monogrammed Cookie FavorsDo it right and you will have memories of a pretty and festive dessert hour that went smoothly.

Guests like having a choice and it also helps keep the reception up and moving. Prepare for people to start saying goodbye after the dessert bar.

Typically, that's when guests start making their exits. It may take a while for everyone to leave, so be sure to be available for goodbye hugs and kisses.

Coffee & Tea Are a Must

It can be really fun to have a dessert bar at your wedding.

Guests feel free to get up and mingle some more.

And they get to treat themselves to exactly what they like.

Be sure to have lots of coffee and tea on hand to go along with dessert.

These can be served at the table if your meal was a sit down or you can allow guests to help themselves at the coffee bar.

I love the creativity of a dessert bar. You can really express yourself AND please your guests! When you live in a family that deals with food allergies or special diets, there is an opportunity to make sure everyone is included. That's not always possible with just a single cake! Great lens!
