Changing car wheel - women worst nightmare - made easy

You are a woman and a driver. You know that driving a car is comfortable and pleasant, saves a lot of time and nerves. But what to do when the car gets a flat tire?

First of all: do not panic! Take the matter (and tools) in your hands. Change the wheel yourself. It is not as difficult as it appears to be. On this page you will find the answer how to do it.retweet

Step 1. Safety comes first.

changing tyre triangleSo you discovered that your car have punctured. Don't panic.

If you are in your garage- get your husband. Just kidding! You can do it yourself.

If you were driving, stop the car on the road shoulder as far from the traffic as possible, so that you'll stay out of the way for other drivers. Put the hazard lights on and take the warning triangle out of the car trunk. Place the triangle a few meters behind your car (the further the higher speed limit on the road is).

Your safety is very important. When shifting a wheel or doing some other car repairs close the the traffic, always wear a reflective vest. This one has 3 inch reflective stripes and is high visibility safety lime colored.

Step 2. Preparation.

changing tyre wrenchBe very careful if you have punctured on the left side (in most countries) or on the right side (UK, Australia, Japan). You can have fast passing cars behind your back.

Ensure that the ground is hard and even. Apply the handbrake. Take the spare wheel out of the trunk. If full-sized, it can be heavy. Take out the car jack and tools (a wrench). If you don't have any of those- call your husband/boyfriend. He will be impressed of what you have done so far.

Take off the hubcap. Using the wrench that you miraculously have found in the trunk, slightly loose the wheel mounting bolts. If you don't have enough strength to move them, carefully put your own weight on the tool .

Step 3. Up and off

changing tyre jackingFind a lifting point closest to the wheel to be removed. Place the jack under the car and slowly lift the car. Be careful, your car is like a hippo- it is quite heavy. When the wheel is over the ground level, stop jacking.

Now use the wrench again and completely unscrew the bolts. Carefully take off the wheel. Well done! You're half way of the process!

Now is the time to fully tighten the wheel bolts with the wrench. If you don't have enough strength, carefully put your own weight on the tool.

You almost done it!

1 Ton Scissor Jack

This one you will need to lift your car. It's small, relatively light and doesn't need electricity to operate. It will do the job.
Capacity: 1 Ton
Lifting Range: 3½" x 13¾"

Step 5. Finish!

changing tyreRemove the jack, replace the hubcap, place the flat tyre in your car. Congratulations! You've changed a flat tyre by yourself! Wasn't that difficult, was it? Well, done!

Remember to take with you the emergency triangle. I've seen many "lonely" triangles abandoned by their owners.

Remember also to take the flat tyre to specialist for examination. If your spare tyre wasn't full sized, there may be some restrictions on usage, like a lower speed limit. Such a tyre is only for emergency situations, it should be replaced with normal tyre as soon as possible.

My work involves a lot of driving mostly on my own. For my own safety I am always prepared to be able to change a flat tyre myself and have done so on numerous occasions. For a woman especially driving on her own a flat tyre can be a horendous experience but if you are prepared changing a flat tyre is something any woman can do.

Whenever I change cars I always do a practice wheel change at home so I know where the spare wheel is kept and how the jack works.

As well as the normal tools supplied with the car I keep the follwing items in my boot

An extending handle wheel key which allows me to loosen even the tightest wheel nuts

A pair of rubber kitchen gloves which keep my hands and nails clean when handling dirty tyres

A long shiny yellow PVC raincoat with a hood which will keep me dry while I am changing a wheel. Even if its not raining I still wear the raincoat as it saves my good clothes from getting filthy. Wearing the bright yellow raincoat makes you more visible to other drivers if you are changing a wheel at the roadside.

A good torch which you can lay on the ground to let you see what you are doing if you have to change a wheel on a dark night.

With these simple inexpensive items in my boot I dont fear getting a puncture even on a country road on a dak wet night. One dark wet night on my way to an important meeting I ran over a piece of metal on the road and insantly my front tyre was flat .Wearing my gloves and PVC raincoat I changed the wheel by torch light at the roadside not the most pleasant of experiences. Although I was late for the meeting I arrived still looking smart clean hands and hair in place. The other women attending the meeting were amazed when I explained the reason for being late was that on my way to the meeting I had changed a wheel .

Ladies if you are prepared getting a flat tyre need not be a horendous experience having to wait for help to arrive or accepting help from strangers
