How to Start a Web Design Website

Making a Web Design Website from Scratch
Congratulations - you are now embarking on the fantastic journey of making your own website! Making a website is a very rewarding experience; not only are you carving out your own little corner of the internet (or perhaps a very big corner), you also have the freedom to put anything you want on your site and express yourself however you feel like. I'll show you step by step how to make a web design site and all the resources you need to be successful.
Personally, I got my start with my first professional (aka it had paid hosting and a paid domain, as opposed to the dozens of free websites I previously had) for my birthday when I was pretty young. The site was started because of a guild I had on the virtual pet website Neopets, but it gradually transformed into a web design site. Over time the website became more about graphics and tutorials and less about Neopets.
I added a lot more stuff to my website and got some great affiliates. I was so happy the day I got 100 visitors. It never got much beyond that until I FINALLY changed hosts almost two years later and it jumped overnight to 300 a day. Then it jumped to 500 visitors a day and during Christmas time it went up to 1,000 a day. After the holidays it went back to around 700 a day, and at the moment it gets around 200 visitors a day since I sporadically stop updating for 6 months at a time (bad idea, if you're wondering). The most visitors we ever had in a single day was over 8,000 people. I pretty much died that day. So, I've learned a lot from my website, made some money, had fun, acquired a ton of computer skills in general and for specific programs like Photoshop, and overall had a great experience. I would strongly recommend starting a website just to see if you like it. You never know. :)
1. Get Website / Blog Hosting
The first step in starting a web design website is finding a good host. If you're just starting out you may want to use a free host, but if this is for a professional project, a design portfolio, or a website for your web design business, you should definitely use a paid host so you can buy a domain name and not have ads cluttering up your page.
In my opinion the best paid host is Lunar Pages, a host I've been with for several years and had no problems. They are very helpful people and have reasonable rates with more space than you could possibly use.

Now, if you are going to use a free host, you should avoid the ones with lots of banner ads that give your page a shoddy look. Here is a list of the best free website hosts, with minimal or no ads:
- Awardspace
- Free website hosting
- Blogger
- Free blog hosting
- Dot Easy
- * Free hosting if you buy a paid domain name with them
- Free Hostia
- My personal favorite free website hosting
- Mister
- * Free hosting if you buy a paid domain name with them
- Webs
- Free website hosting, with or without premade templates
- Wordpress Blog Hosting

2. Use a File Management or Content Management System
The next step after you have hosting is to get a way to take your fabulous ideas and get them from your brain to the internet. There are two main ways to do this: with a file management program (also called an FTP program, or file transfer protocol) or with a content management system.
A file management program is software you install on your computer so you can create and code your pages in Notepad or Frontpage or Dreamweaver and upload them through the program. The creation of the website is done on your computer, and then it is published to the internet.
A content management system is a script (a giant one at that!) that you install on your website and then you create and edit all pages from the internet. The creation of the website is done online, and then it is published online directly.
Here are my top recommended free file management programs and content management systems, many of which I have personally tried or currently use:
- Filezilla
- File management / FTP program- this is what I use
- FTP Surfer
- File management / FTP program
- KompoZer
- File management / FTP program
- WS_FTP
- File management / FTP program
- Drupal
- Content management system- whole site
- Joomla
- Content management system- whole site
- Light CMS
- Content management system- especially for designers
- Movable Type
- Content management system- for blogging
- Wordpress
- Content management system- for whole sites or blogging, this is what I use

3. Get a Free Domain
After you have hosting and a way to get your content on the internet, you should consider getting a domain name. The following are websites where you can get a free domain extension. You have a choice of either redirecting to your site (you would go to the domain and it would instantly go to your real site) or masking your real site's address, which makes the domain url show up on every page. Keep in mind these are different domain extensions than the usual .com or .org or .dot. You can see the names by viewing the websites below:
- .CO.CC
- Free domain name- I use this website
- .CO.NR
- Free domain name
- Smart Dots
- Free domain name
- Tip Dots

4. Design the Layout, Pages, and Content
If you're making a web design website, you'll need to start by designing a good quality layout, then adding the pages and adding content to each page. You might be making graphics for other people, displaying your personal design portfolio, writing a design inspiration blog, or holding a website for your entire design firm. Regardless of the requirements, you're going to need a computer art program so you can make the graphics that will give your website a personality.

Here are the best free digital art programs available:
- Artweaver
- Free digital art program
- Gimp

- Paint.NET
- Free digital art program
- SUMO Paint
- Free online digital art program, no download required
Best Digital Art Program: Adobe Photoshop
Why Photoshop Rocks for Web Designing
Adobe Photoshop Extended CS5 Student and Teacher Edition
Amazon Price: $199.99 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
I recommend Adobe Photoshop more than any other program because I have used it for over nine years and it's the best image editing software I have come across (and I've tried quite a few!).
Although it's pricey, with a student or teacher discount it is much more affordable and trust me, it is well worth the cost if you are going to be a professional web designer or plan on making money from your web design website. If you monetize your site, like joining affiliate programs, placing ads, or selling merchandise, you can easily justify the cost of this program.
Also, it will speed up your graphic design and make every step of the web design process much faster, saving you time and effort. Overall, I fully back this product.

5. Tips for Great Webpage Content

Want to have great content? Here are some general tips for your newly-created website.
1. Don't steal.
Stealing includes (but is not limited to): copying someone's layout, copying someone's graphics style, using someone's css, using someone's exact color scheme, taking the source code from a music preview and giving it away on your site, copying someone's tutorials, redistributing fonts you didn't make, using celebrity images, and saving someone's graphics to your own host and claiming them as yours.
2. Be original.
A little originality can go a long way. For example, say that someone is walking along (even though you can't really walk on the internet..) and they've been to 40 sites already, looking for one with original graphics. All they've seen so far are graphics that look like everyone's been copying from everyone and the site layouts are all the same three-column style. If, on the 41st website (which is yours), has an original layout, they will probably think, hmm.. if this site has an original layout, it probably has original graphics too. Then they'll look around your site and maybe even favorite it and come back daily. If your site has a common-looking layout, they will probably X out and never come back.
3. Avoid writing long instructions.
If you want a single line of text for instructions, that's fine, but what isn't good (and won't be read) is two fat paragraphs of demanding instructions. If someone comes to your website on a daily basis, they will probably eventually read it, but if you want something to be read right away, make it short and simple. (this doesn't include tutorials or articles, though; be as wordy as you want for those).
4. Don't excessively use chat speak or have poor spelling.
If writing has good spelling and isn't full of abbreviations, it is much easier to read and can be scanned easier. For example, which do you think is easier to read?
WeLCoM 2 my sit. its kewl n we hv ToNs ov grephics n junk
Welcome to my site! It's cool and we have tons of graphics and stuff.
5. Don't have 'dead' links or pages with no content.
Dead links are links that go to error pages, and pages with no content are pages that sometimes have nothing but the site layout and other times have an 'Under Construction' sign. Both are bad, and the way to prevent this is 1. Go through all your site links at least once a week and 2. Don't link to a page until you are finished with it.
6. Have fast-loading pages.
Many times, I've clicked on a link to a website I've never been at before and if it takes more than three seconds to load, I'll open a new window and go to some fast-loading website while I wait. If after about ten seconds, if the other site hasn't loaded yet, I'll X out of it. If your pages are really fast, people will get to go to more of your site. If it's slow, they can't just click around like a maniac until they find something they like. And clicking like a maniac is something everyone wants to be able to do.
7. Your color scheme should not burn your visitors' eyes out.
Any color like hot pink, lime green, or cyan blue is a color that equates to eye burning. Also, colors like the standard red and blue, when used in massive amounts, can burn your eyes. Muted or subdued versions of any color are fine, though.
8. Keep a consistent layout.
If you have five bajillion layouts for one site, people are going to get confused and think they're at a new website. If you still want to add some change on every page, you can have a top banner with a character or photo in the corner that varies for each page. The banner is the same, but the character can change. If you really want to have different layouts for your main site and graphics or whatever, you should only have 1-3 layouts total.
9. Navigation is better left conventional
Even though I said that you should be original, the navigation should not be. If you have some new navigation that your visitor has never seen before, they might not be able to figure it out and then they'll just leave your site. Your links should be on the left or top, but you can get away with having it on the right, or if you have a small frame or blog layout, the bottom. You have to decide if you want to have buttons or links that link to a page full of more links or if you're going to display all of your links at one time.
10. Splash pages are unnecessary
Splash pages (the page that has an enter button) are usually more annoying than helpful. If you are going to display all of your affiliates, referring sites, fan listings, AND you plan on changing your layout a lot (and you aren't using something like php includes that makes changing the layout a lot easier) a splash page would be helpful. But if you aren't, then before you decide to make a splash page, remember that it's just one more link for the visitor to click. A splash page doesn't really give any useful content.

6. Advertise Your Website and Drive Visitors and Traffic
Now that you've designed the pages and added plenty of content, it's time to get visitors to your site!1. Affiliates
Affiliates are a great way to pull in some extra traffic. However, be choosy because you don't want to link to a bunch of sites that get no hits. Then they're leaching off your hits. That's a bad thing. On the opposite side, it would be rude to apply to be a site's affiliate that gets thousands of visitors a day, and you only get ten. So affiliate with similar sites, and be sure to go to their sites often to make sure it isn't dead. Remember this as well: don't affiliate with 50 sites! Go for quality, not quantity.
2. Topsites
Topsites are really helpful in getting traffic, but they won't be if you aren't getting hits already. The closer you are on the list to being number one, the more hits you'll get from being listed. You shouldn't join topsites for the first couple weeks or so until you have at least ten or more visits a day (a visit is a unique person, a hit is a refresh). Once you start pulling in traffic from other means, you can join a few topsites that have sites similar to yours, and start reaping the benefits.
3. Plug Boards
Plug boards are those quilt-like boards of people's site buttons. You just add your button and it's instant advertising. The problem with these is you only get maybe five or so hits, depending a lot on what site the plug board is at, before your site comes off the board (your button goes off when enough people have plugged their site after you.)
4. Get Reviewed
If you get your site reviewed by someone, not only will it help you improve your site, they usually link to all the sites they've reviewed (and what their comments were, of course).
5. Pay Attention to What Your Visitors Like
If the people at your site keep emailing you to say,"Wow! I love your blinkies!" then make more blinkies. Although you should still keep making more of the other content you have, make a lot of the stuff people really like. Chances are, they'll come back daily if you keep adding more of their favorite graphic. And once you've been making blinkies non-stop for months, you'll be really good and then everyone will come to you for high-quality blinkies.
6. Tell Your Friends About Your Site
This is one of the best methods because if you have a lot of friends, that's a lot of visitors, but also because then your friends will tell their friends because they came to your site from you and not just randomly surfing the net.
7. Advertise on Forums
I'm not saying you should start 20 threads advertising your site- oh no, that's one of the worst things you can do. I'm saying you should join several forums about graphics and casually provide a link to your website in your signature. If you're an active poster, people will eventually click the link and find your site. Also, if it's a graphics forum there may be a Site Plugging board, so be sure to check.
8. Button Exchanges
An exchange is like being affiliates with someone, but usually with less strict requirements. You have one page with a wall full of buttons that link to the people who are linking to your site. Because there are so many buttons, your link probably won't get all that much exposure.
9. Join Directories
If you find someone with a directory of sites, apply to join it. There are directories for many different kinds of web design sites. For example, in the past I created a flash dressup game and submitted it to a dressup game directory and I had 8,000 unique visitors in a single day (up from only a few hundred)! I have also submitted a number of tutorials to tutorial directories and seen hundreds of visitors from that as well.
10. Join Rotations
A rotation is when you put a code on your site that randomly picks a site that has joined a particular rotation, and a link to the rotation site itself. The more popular a rotation is, the more sites it's on, but it also means there are less odds that your button will be displayed (since it's random).
11. Be Original
Yes, it's cliché. But by being original or perhaps making something original (like some type of graphic) you will suddenly become the only site on the block with the hippest jazz. Of course, you'll probably get a lot of sites after you copying whatever you came up with, but visitors usually know the difference between the original originality and a cheap, poser version. The hardest part is coming up with something that hasn't been done and that people will want! :)
I hope these tips help you get more visitors, and remember that getting steady traffic takes a while!
7. Promote Your Website and Build Community with Social Networks
Once you've tried the tips above for getting traffic and visitors, it's time to join some social networks so you can build a community around your website and encourage new visitors as well as keeping the old. Here are some of the most popular social networks for web design websites:
- Design Bump
- Promote individual pages and people can vote them up, just for design sites
- Design Float
- Promote individual pages and people can vote them up, just for design sites
- Digg
- Promote individual pages and people can vote them up, for any kind of website
- Start a Facebook page for your website, post news, comment and talk with visitors, and gather a loyal following of members/visitors
- Stumble Upon
- Add your pages and then people can use Stumble Upon's website to randomly find your submitted pages
- Technorati
- Add your website and people can rank it
- Make a twitter page for your web design website to post about site updates or design-related news or inspiration to gain followers, some of whom will be first-time visitors to your website
