How to Start an Internet Business

If you're looking for ways to make extra money, you may want to learn how to start an Internet business using affiliate programs. Most affiliate programs are free to join, and all you have to do is send targeted traffic to the merchant's website in exchange for a commission if any sales are made as a result. In other words, if someone buys a particular product after clicking on your unique link encoded with your affiliate ID (given to you by the merchant), you'll get paid.

As you can see, it's pretty straightforward. However, there are some additional steps that you should take if you want to be really successful.

First, you need to find a "hungry market" that has a history of spending lots of money on various products in that niche. You can use keyword tools, search engines, and print advertising to get a feel for whether or not people are spending money in your chosen niche. (If advertisers are spending a lot of money to reach the market, that's a good indication that it's profitable.)

The next step is to identify a hot-selling product within that market. You can go to affiliate networks such as ClickBank.com and Commission Junction (cj.com) to find appropriate products. When you've chosen a suitable product, create your unique affiliate link. (The affiliate program that you sign up with will either give you the link or show you how to create it.)

Third, start sending traffic to your affiliate link. Common ways to do this are by placing online ads, writing articles and submitting them to directories, and doing search engine optimization (SEO). Ideally, you'd want to have your own website so that you can set up a "lead capture page" or "squeeze page" for getting people to opt-in to your mailing list so that you can follow up with them. It's more difficult to make affiliate sales if you just send people directly to an offer without getting their contact information first. So, to capture leads, you'll need to set up an autoresponder account at either GetResponse.com or Aweber.com.

If you decide to set up a squeeze page (highly recommended), you should drive traffic to your squeeze page instead of your affiliate link. It's also recommended that you track where all of your traffic is coming from so that you can put more effort into those traffic sources that are working and get rid of those that aren't working. You can use Google Analytics to do this.

Last, but not least, none of the above will lead you to success without your having the right mindset.

You must realize that *knowing* how to start an Internet business is not enough. You need to take action and set goals that will help you maintain focus. Most new affiliate marketers never make any money because they either don't take action, or they take lots of actions that are all over the board and don't result in any significant results.
