What Do I Sell To Get Started.
Look Around Your Home
Every household has over $2,000 worth of items in their home to sell that they are no longer using. When you start to look for items to sell, go through every room and find things you no longer want or need.
You will be amazed at how many items you will find that you no longer need or use.
Tips:
1) If you are struggling and don't like parting with your items. Then go to friends and family, ask them for 3-5 of their unwanted items, to help you start your eBay business.
2) Still finding it hard? Go to garage sales or thrift shops. Buy items that are not to large and popular eg. CD's DVD's and books. Also brand name clothing is a great seller. Remember not to pay to much!!
3) Still struggling? Go to large department stores such as Target, etc.
Get their super, super specials and sell those, people in remote areas will snap them up.
The main thing to do is research your items.
eBay Listings Explained
To sell on eBay is a very simple process just follow the tutorials step by step. Then you will be well on your way to making money online. The first listing is the hardest and once you have done that it gets easier.
Now there are several different listings you can use.
Note: For beginners Stores are not available and neither is selling worldwide. You must have 6 DSR's to open a store and to sell internationally.
DSR's(Detail Seller Response) are the star ratings that customers leave you. This you will find in your feedback section.
You can list your items for 3,5,7 or 10 days.
Or 30 days buy it now
Or good till cancelled.
To start with you will mainly list in the 7 or 10 day Auction format. Until you have your feedback up to 10 from customers.
When listing your items I strongly recommend that you list at a good time for your local area. A good time is generally on a week day in the evening.
I do not recommend your Auction finishing on a Saturday night. You would be leaving too much money behind.
Different items are best started at different times. Again this is where your research is very important.
Mistakes Most Sellers Make
Some Seller's make a lot of mistakes unbeknown to themselves. We can learn from these sellers, so that we can become better sellers. Here is a list of what not to do:
1) Not enough information, sketchy descriptions
2) Threatening notes in listings pay or else you will get reported.
3) Bad photo's - very unclear and blurry.
4) Unnecessary colour and flashing add-ons in background.
5) Wrong listing titles and not utilizing all 54 characters
6) No shipping details
7) Not understanding eBays policies
Don't sell anything Fake unless you state similar to and don't use Brand names in Title if they are Fake.
Not doing the right thing can get your eBay account suspended.
As we are building a business we want to do the right thing.
Take a look around at what the successful sellers are doing and base you listing on what they are doing.
P.S. Do not copy the exactly but create your own theme in a similar fashion. You are only looking for ideas better to brand yourself early with your own style.
Finding New Products To Sell
If you do not want to continue to sell pre loved goods then you need to source Brand New products. At this point there are only three words that need to be spoken.
RESEARCH!! RESARCH!! RESEARCH!!
This research can be on and off eBay. Look at what consumers are buying and why. Walk through shopping Malls and see what young mum's are buying for their children. See what is popular with Teenagers. Ask your friends what their last purchase was and why.
You will suddenly look at all shoppers in a different way. If you see 6 people in a shopping mall all buying the same item, then you can be sure there is a pattern occurring here.
If you don't get to the shopping mall much there are places online were you can do the same research.
Here we are looking for a Niche as opposed to a trend; trends can die out to quickly leaving you stuck with the product.

- Nice Lens, I have been selling on eBay for a 2 years, eBay doesn't always make it easy on the seller, because so many were overcharging on shipping, eBay started factoring shipping into the final value fee, I sell vinyl records, and I can not charge more than $4.00 for shipping by rule, with shipping supplies I now just break even on the shipping, and as a consequence, I can not justify a Delivery Confirmation number for every record shipped, it costs me $3.60 to ship one record, eBay gets about .40 cents of the 4.00, if I add confirmation, because of the new final value fee structure, I must go out of pocket .85 cents per record, I sell a lot of 3.99 and bellow records, Now eBay is requiring 90% of your shipments to have a confirmation number or you lose your top rated seller discount, This type of stuff I must admit, gets under my skin a bit, do I raise my prices? and sell less of course, or do I just suck it up until the next eBay change drives me completely out of business, The USPS has raised their Media Mail rates twice in 13 months, including insurance and confirmation cost, but yet eBay still will only allow 4.00 for shipping one record, My point is this, I think eBay should be more in tune with individual selling categories, offer small exemptions, or at least give a waiver on the final value fee shipping inclusion to sellers who can't gouge on shipping any way. in closing, since I started on eBay, they have created 2 situations that just about made me want to quit, but I didn't and I won't, I will adjust and keep on doing what I love, but eBay better be real careful and heed my words, A lot of sellers I know in my category, are right at the edge of calling it quits. Thanks for the forum, it's much appreciated.

- Hi,
Thanks for sharing you experience with us. This will be very helpful to anyone starting out. Yes, I agree that some times the eBay charges are not terrific. Luckily with the clothing I sell it has not been to difficult. But I know when I first started I was selling books and there is a block on the postage with that. So I had to charge more for the books to compensate.
When new sellers are looking for a niche market to sell in. They will need to keep that in mind.
Good luck with your eBay business and hope all goes well.
Cheers Margot:-)
