How To Start In Stand-Up Comedy

There are many types of Stand Up Comedians. Some are observational. Others use their dry wit. Still others are impersonators, and some get away with complete absurdity. What are you? Finding your voice is not only the most important task you must set yourself to, but it is probably the one that will take you the longest.

This will come to you as you write and perform. You will find what you are comfortable with and what aspect of your personality can just ooze material. The important thing is that once you find it, you never lose it. The more secure you are in your view of the world, the more the audience will respond to you.

A 5 minute bit. It is the basic building block of every new Stand Up Comedian. It sounds simple enough, right? Well, as you come into your own as a writer, it will be, but knocking out that first bit can be tough. This is where you will get your first bite of the process it takes to write. Observe everything around you. Watch your favorite Stand Up Comedians. Record conversations you have with friends and family. Mine the funny out of every situation you can. At the end of it all, try and make that into 5 coherent (or incoherent if that is your style) minutes of conversation with the audience.

Having this first go-to bit is key. Once it is written, practice in front of anyone who will listen. Re-write anything that can be made funnier. Make this piece your own in every way.

Now comes the real work. If you are just starting out, you will likely have to book your first few appearances yourself. Exhaust every resource. There are many comedy clubs that advertise open mic opportunities online and in newspapers. Make sure to find those. Also don't be afraid to walk into the club and ask to speak with the person who handles bookings. Many clubs are looking for fresh talent, and would not mind giving you a shot. You just have to show them you have the passion and talent.

All in all, when you are starting you, don't forget you are doing this for you. Every new comedian will have writer's block. Everyone will have bad nights, good nights, and great nights. EVERYONE gets heckled at least once in their careers. The important thing to remember is that you should be having fun too. Don't stress. Enjoy yourself, have fun, and you will be fine.
