How To Survive A Nuclear Disaster
Ranked #2,128 in Education, #51,267 overall
Nuclear power plant accidents can happen at any time. Remember: Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now, Japan.
Everyone is asking how to stay safe during a nuclear disaster, now that Japan's earthquake and tsunami disaster has turned into a nuclear power worst scenario nightmare.
Why a country with so much earthquake activity would build so many nuclear power plants is a question on many minds. Their efforts toward industry and technology caused a dependence on nuclear power where there are few other energy options. However this has endangered their own country, and in turn will send radioactive fallout all over the world.
How many more nuclear disasters will this world endure before all the nuclear power plants are shut down and an agrarian society re-established on earth?

Nuclear fallout - how to avoid it
...avoid risk of harm during a nuclear disaster.
If you live in the USA there may be no way to avoid the nuclear fallout. Unknown to us in 1966 experimental nuclear explosions in China sent radioactive fallout all over the North American continent except parts of the Pacific Northwest and Florida. See map here.
The immediate threat from nuclear fallout from the Japanese nuclear disaster is the spread of radioiodine throughout the atmosphere to infect our agriculture, especially dairy cows. Our milk supply could be polluted with radioiodine for up to a month and this could later cause thyroid cancer in humans. See: Surviving Radioactive Fallout & Radiation Contamination from Japan.
It is best to stay stocked up on food before such a disaster, as food supplies for the following year are likely to contain the radioactive iodine. If dairy products are of concern to your family you can stock up now on dry milk and cheese or other products that could be frozen and used later while US manufacturers are selling their stock of foods infested with the radioiodine pollution. To expect food manufacturers not to sell these supplies is unreasonable; that is not the way of the US food suppliers, most of whom seem to put their profit before the health interests of the American public. You can expect these issues to be suppressed in mainstream media. See: Why I No Longer Consume the Standard American Diet.
Get some duck tape
...if you have heavy radioactive fallout and can't get away.
Duck Brand 1344909 1.88-Inch by 10-Yard Colored Duck Tape, Totally Tie Dye
Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
Yes, duck tape! Get some to keep in your emergency survival kit - along with rolls of heavy black plastic. This plastic can be used to cover windows and doors. Stay inside for two weeks after an attack. You will need to be prepared with food and water.
The Japanese antidote
...from a country that should know a few things about recovering from radioactive fallout.
The Japanese government is distributing iodine to their citizens. Fortunately I already have food-grade iodine on my shelf as I use it for hypothyroid disorder issues, instead of using pharmaceutical synthroid medications.
If you are concerned about the effects of radioactive iodine, it might be expedient to find some right away. It is suggested to take potassium iodide tablets for a week to ten days while the radioactive iodine clouds are in your area.
Information from the manufacturer:
In 1982, the FDA approved IOSAT potassium iodide tablets for blocking the thyroid's absorption of cancer-causing radioactive iodine (only the thyroid absorbs iodine). Saturate the thyroid with potassium iodide's stable iodine so it won't absorb radioactive iodine, the predominate radioisotope released from a nuclear reactor release or nuclear bomb fallout.
iOSAT Potassium Iodide Tablets, 130 mg (14 Tablets)
Amazon Price: $7.53 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
* Please read all label information upon delivery
* Reduces chance of thyroid damage in a radiation emergency
* Safe for babies, children, pregnant and nursing women, those taking medicine for thyroid problem
* One dose every 24 hours for no more than 10 days

Learn more about the Japanese nuclear power plant disaster
...how did this happen? And why?
Here we see a disaster created by a country's excessive push toward materialism. I'm not blaming Japanese people, only the government that allowed this insanity - especially near known earthquake faults. What were they thinking?
Here in California we have the same situation. I've lived in California all my life but am powerless against industrial interests and the government who have combined forces and build nuclear power plants here near known earthquake fault lines. For years people have wondered why they would do such an obviously foolhardy thing. Is materialism and industry all that important? Really?

- Interesting lens, I will probably get the potassium iodide from you for my survival kit. As a breast cancer survivor who has gone through radiation, chemo and surgery - I must say the radiation is the one that I would hesitate the most about. A chemo nurse told me that the sick joke was " radiation was the gift that kept on giving." Bless the hearts of the people of Japan. Because of all this, in spite of our energy needs I think we should decide NO NUKES.

- I live north of you, in Victoria, BC. We have been told there is nothing to worry about. Hopefully this is true, but I do feel very badly for the people of Japan. I've lensrolled this, and am adding it to my food storage lens.

- A great read. Keeping your car full of petrol (gas) is probably a good idea too rather than letting the tank get down to empty (which is what I tend to do). I wonder how taking iodine can protect against radiation poisoning....

- It is sad that it sometimes takes disasters such as what happened in Japan for us to educate ourselves about the ways to protect ourselves. No one prays for any disaster, but the reality is that it could happen anywhere! Thanks for the lens.
