How to Stop a Dog Fight - Stop a Dog from Fighting

How to stop a dog fight.  Dr. Dennis Fetko, "Dr. Dog" here...A man in my county was killed trying to protect his dog from an attack by his neighbor's dogs.  There's nothing amusing about a dogfight--or its outcome!  Learn how to stop a dog fight...

As with stopping any behavior problem, preventing a dog fight is easier than stopping a dog fight and there's a lot you can do to avoid dogfights in the first place.  To prevent dog fights between two dogs that are yours, the most important thing to remember is this:  the more dogs have in common, the more likely they are to fight with each other.

Fortunately, we don't have to concern ourselves with things that don't matter to dogs, like size or color.  Preventing dog fights in the first place is preferable to having to learn how to stop a dog fight.  So, if you are wondering, "How do I stop my dogs from fighting?" the preferred way of preventing dogfights is to choose two dogs that are very different from each other.

The four most critical factors in preventing dog fights by owning two dogs that are not similar are:  age, sex (and neutering), temperament, and early social learning.  A recipe for disaster is two un-neutered female littermates. Talk about a lit fuse!  You're betting their lives and your family's safety that their temperaments alone are so different that they won't have to stop dog fights.  You've got better odds in the lottery.  Sure, someone wins the lottery!  But for every winner, there are ten million losers.  Great odds--especially when the loser gets killed or injured in a dog fight.

In my training ebook, Dr. Dog's Behavior Solutions, you will find extensive information about stopping dog fights whether the dogs are yours or not and about preventing dog fights. If the two dogs involved in the dog fight are both yours, my ebook describes how to treat your dogs so that they are comfortable in their pack position--this, in itself can stop your dogs from fighting.

The poll in the next section shows that many dog owners have fighting problems between their own dogs.  Do you try to treat your dogs equally with treats, affection, and reprimands?  Do you determine who is the "leader" and defer to him or her?

It may surprise you to learn that how you choose and use your dogs' names can stop dogs from fighting. Learn more about choosing and using your dog's name to prevent dog fights.  Also there are some powerful things you can do to enhance the bonding between your dogs.  Learn more in my training ebook, Dr. Dog's FAST, EASY, FUN Behavior Solutions.

How to Stop Dogs From Fighting: Gender Traits to Dogfights - Stop Dog Fights

You may be surprised at the difference between stopping dog fights between males and females.

How to Stop Your Dogs From Fighting

There is a unique gender trait to dogfights. Both sexes fight, but not for the same reasons or goals. Dog fights between males are primarily for dominance, status, and pack rank. They don't fight to kill because a pack with few healthy dog fighters is weak and vulnerable. If one male submits and dominance is established, the dog fight usually ends. But females often fight to eliminate their opponent. So, stopping dog fights between males or females can have different consequences.

Except during breeding season, females are less concerned with dominance. If one submits during a heated dog fight, she may well be killed. A simple way to think of it is that males are more prone to dog fights--but their dogfights are less serious. Females are less prone to fight, but the loser can die. So it is critical to learn how to stop dog fights, especially with female dogs.

If a male dies from a dog fight, it's usually because a major blood vessel or nerve is accidentally severed. A female dies because her opponent's goal was to kill her. Now you see why we tell people who want multiple dogs to avoid two from the same litter and two of the same sex and why I used two sisters in my earlier example of a lit fuse!

I have one old Golden (male) who is about 14...our other two dogs (a black lab mix (male) that is about 7 and a little border collie (female) about 5. The Golden has been sick recently, having trouble standing up and such (he is on meds). The two younger dogs have been aggresively attacking (bitting, scratching) the older Golden...not a fight exacty because he can't really fight back. Are they trying to pick off the weak? How can I prevent this? If you could help it would be great!
