The Scenario

stop do chewing furnitureSo, you came home to another doggie chewing mess or maybe it's that missing left shoe you've been looking for, and it is chew to bits. Thought you'd be nice and put a new fluffy bed his kennel, only to find he has torn a hole in it and pulled all of the stuffing out. Confused, bewildered and frustrated you say to yourself, I wish I knew how to stop a dog from chewing on everything!

Dogs chew on things for many reasons and not always for the same reasons. Like people, dogs have unique personalities and emotional triggers. Learning how to stop a dog from chewing on everything takes a bit of detective work. Some dogs only chew on wood, while others prefer fabric. Your dog may only chew on left shoes. Don't ask me why, or how, but I have seen it for myself. And still, a great many dogs chew on anything they can get in their mouth.

Ask any experienced dog trainer about dog chewing, and they'll tell you that it is a behavioral/emotional problem. Guess what, there's good news. Behavior/emotional problem with your dog can be fixed with a little observation and the proper training techniques. Let's start with the first step, discovering the "what", "when" and "how often". Once you know these things you can move on to the proper dog training techniques.

Discovering the "What", "When" and "How Often" to Stop Dog Chewing

Get Your Detective Hat On

Stop Dog Chewing the FurnitureWe'll start with the "what". Knowing what your dog chews on most often can lead you to an easy fix. If your dog likes to chew a particular idem like left shoes. The easy fix could be as simple as keeping your shoes out of reach of your furry little buddy. But if your want to zero in on training for your dog, a shoe would be a great training aid. And the same goes for wood, pillows or whatever your dog has a taste for. If your dog chews on everything then believe it or not, this is probably the easiest problem to fix. (more on that later.)

Now let's talk about the "when". Does your dog only chew on his preferred victim when you're gone, while you're in bed, only in his kennel or crate? Does he chew only when there are loud noises around him, like a party or fireworks? These situations could trigger behaviors that are more emotional, like a teething baby and a pacifier, your dog uses chewing to calm his nerves.

And finally, let's cover the "how often". The "how often" your dog chews on everything, kind of ties into the "when" he chews on things. If he only chews on things when you're gone, then you are probably dealing with separation anxiety. If he is constantly trying to find things to chew on, then you may be dealing with a lack of exercise.

Our female German Shorthaired Pointer destroyed an entire couch AND loveseat. Right.down.to.the.wood.

And stood their wagging her tail when we found her.

My dog (you can meet him at my lens on Miniature Dachshunds) is 5 but he always chews his beds...yes, he's had a few beds and I patch them up. New beds, old beds they all get chewed. He's funny as he won't chew a cushion on the couch or the throw...thank heaven!!

I figure he's trying to get attention some of the time but I also think it's a fettish with him. Like the lambskin rug that's by his kennel. He likes to pretend he's killing it! It's his so I ignore him now and just pick up fluff.
