Just what causes a panic attack is a question that has been asked by many and the answers vary from expert to expert but the bottom line though is all panic attacks are caused by anxiety and anxiety can come about for a million different reasons. Controlling the anxiety which leads to a panic attack may take some time but the trigger to this event must be recognized so a method to stop it from happening can be devised.

This is about taking control and being aware of an anxiety attack trigger is an important step forward to completely eliminating them. No-one should feel that feeling of anxiety so they must know from the outset that the goal is to eliminate the anxiety completely.

It is not uncommon for panic attacks to be the result of a situation that has happened to the individual in the past which when reminded about, results in strong emotions of fear, anger, frustration even guilt or depression but the trigger will vary from person to person. All of these emotions come from one source or generalized place in the brain and they can be categorized as general anxiety attributes and people with GAD (general anxiety disorder) are all too familiar with these feelings.

The workplace can also be responsible for triggering feelings of anxiety and as a consequence a panic attack, which can even happen when someone dislikes their work intently. While some people seem to thrive on this type of stress, others react from the tension by having a panic attack.

When people have an attack, they normally hyperventilate or start breathing short very rapid breaths which will often result in feelings of death. Stopping this escalation of anxiety and fear is easier than you think and the first step in taking control starts with breathing so if you can control your breathing then you can control your brain's focus.

Breathing exercises can be practiced and once this has been learned it is only a matter of initiating what they have learned to control and then end the anxiety attack. This involves inhaling for two seconds while pushing the stomach out and exhaling for another two seconds; this is repeated for as long as possible.

At no time must you think that because you have to consciously control your breathing that you are not in complete control. The symptom of the panic attack becomes the hyperventilation which can be controlled by breathing exercises which means that the attack will subside very quickly once this has been achieved. If for some reason this method is not working then a doctor's advice and attention needs to be sought so the condition does not persist.

The more popular ones are those that are of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors then there are the tricyclics while the other popular variant is the monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Often, the doctor will actually mix the medications if it will help the patient. The doctor might actually prescribe a variety of medications to help cure a person's depression illness.

Doctors frequently adjust the amount of medication they give their patient depending on the circumstances. Patients taking depression medication are always warned not to try this for themselves as it something only a qualified professional should do. The patient must also learn that sedatives and other anti-anxiety medications are not anti-depressant drugs and should not be used as substitutes. There are often occasions where these types of medications are given along with others to help offset other side-effects but should never be confused as the primary anti-depressant drugs.

The reason for using these depression medication drugs is merely to calm the nerves of depressed patients not to help cure the depression itself. The tricyclic medication group is responsible for a number of the most notable side-effects. Some people do not mind these side-effects from these drugs, however if it does become too much of a bother they can result in ruining a persons ability to function properly. In any situation like this the first course of action is to report it to your physician as soon as possible.
