How to Stop Anxiety -- Naturally

Sometimes it seems like the world just gets more complicated and stressful everyday, and if you look around, it's clear that many people need to learn how to stop anxiety from wearing them down and limiting their lives.

You CAN Control Anxiety and Panic Attacks--Here's How

How to Stop Anxiety from Controlling Your Life

A certain amount of anxiety is actually necessary in life, and it can even be beneficial in certain situations. But when day-to-day stress builds up over a period of time and doesn't get released, it can cause a wide variety of anxiety symptoms and even panic attacks.

Research even shows that anxiety can be detrimental to our physical health. Several studies have indicated that anxiousness and stress actually weaken our immune systems, reducing our body's ability to fight off infection and illness. Of course, anxiety also takes a big toll on our "mental fitness," and can result in moodiness, depression, and a "short fused" temper.

Obviously, if you're feeling overwhelmed by stress in your life, learning how to stop anxiety from getting out of control should be a major priority. And while there are many methods of reducing stress and anxiety, in this article we will focus on natural anxiety solutions, many of which have been used throughout history, and in many different cultures.

Relaxation exercises have been around since the time of the ancient Greeks (and possibly long before that). One of the most powerful is meditation, but there is a great deal of misinformation and confusion about what meditation is. At its simplest, meditation is simply a method of sitting still and clearing your mind for a period of time. While some experts will describe it in a much more complicated way, at the end of the day, meditation is simply practicing stillness and quieting the mind -- nothing more.

Many people have learned how to stop anxiety by practicing meditation. You can choose to meditate on a daily basis, as part of your normal routine; or you can simply use meditation as a tool to quiet your mind on an "as needed" basis. Either way, the basic technique is very simple to learn:

Two begin, find a comfortable place to sit where you will not be disturbed. It is not advisable to lie down when you meditate, as you may find yourself falling asleep, and you won't receive the same benefits from the meditation. Once you're sitting comfortably, began relaxing the muscles in your body. There are several different ways to do this, but a very popular one is to start by relaxing your feet, ankles and calves, and then work your way up to your stomach, arms, back, shoulders, face and scalp.

Be careful not to rush through the procedure -- take your time and move in a slow, deliberate manner. Once the muscles in your body are relaxed simply attempt to let your mind and go "blank." If a thought should pop into your head, don't fight it. Just observe that it is there, and then slowly push it aside.

Another method that is sometimes used to clear the mind is to focus on your breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly and deliberately, and let the gentle rhythm of your breathing become the center of your attention. This is an excellent way to clear the mind of an external influences, thoughts and worries.

If you have trouble meditating effectively the first few times you try, don't despair. This is quite common, and everyone gets better at meditation with practice. With time you will find a procedure that works best for you, and allows you to push aside your thoughts and simply "be" for little while.

You can also learn how to stop anxiety by using effective self-talk. This is a method based on NLP psychology research, and it utilizes the language centers of the brain. To use calming self talk, begin by sitting in a comfortable position and closing your eyes. You may also want to go through the procedure mentioned above of relaxing your body, one step at a time.

Once your body is beginning to relax, begin to slowly ask yourself the following questions:

1. Why do I feel so calm in this moment?
2. How does it feel to be completely relaxed and still?
3. When was I deeply relaxed in the past?
4. What does it feel like to deeply relax my body and clear my mind?

By slowly repeating these questions you will activate the image center of your mind, and you will subconsciously begin looking for answers to the question, and creating mental images that correspond with the relaxed and calm nature of the questions.

It is interesting to note that simply "telling yourself" to relax deeply is not nearly as effective as asking yourself "what does it feel like to deeply relaxed?" Whenever we ask a question, subconsciously online begins searching for the answer -- even if we are unaware of it. By repeating the questions above in a slow and methodical manner, you will find yourself entering a deeper state of relaxation, and worries and other bothersome thoughts will simply fall away as you continue focusing on the questions.

It is also important that you do not concern yourself with the answers to the questions. Don't worry; your subconscious mind will do that for you. Simply ask the question in a calm and relaxed manner, pause for a moment, and then move on to the next question. Remember, this is not a test, and you do not need to answer any of the questions. They will get answered subconsciously, at a much deeper level.

Finally, another great method of how to stop anxiety is to use visualization. Visualization is the practice of creating visual images and stories in your mind. It is sometimes helpful to think of it as creating little in mini-movies with your eyes closed. This practice has the benefit of guiding our subconscious mind in the direction of our "mental movies." Hence, if we create calm and soothing visual imagery, our mind and body will be pulled in a calm and soothing direction.

To get started, you can follow the same procedure as regular meditation. Just find a comfortable spot where you will not be disturbed, close your eyes and begin to relax your body. Once you begin to relax, see a movie screen in your mind. On that screen, begin to present moving images of people, places, events and circumstances that you find calm and relaxing.

When visualizing, be sure to include as much detail as possible. If you are visualizing a serene national park, for example, be sure to see the colors of the leaves, flowers and trees. Make your image as vivid and 3-D as possible, and even include the sounds you hear. Here birds singing, bees buzzing, or the gentle bubbling of a quiet stream. The more detail the better.

Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks--Guaranteed Method

If you can create a calm and soothing "mental movie" for even a few minutes, you will notice a change in your physiology and your state of mind. Your breathing rate will slow and become steady and calm. Your thoughts will become clear and more organized. Your muscles will relax, and built up tension and anxiety will simply fade away.

If you recognize that you need to learn how to stop anxiety from affecting your body and mind, practicing these types of relaxation exercises is well worth your time and effort. And because these are all natural anxiety reduction techniques, you don't have to concern yourself with medications and potentially dangerous side effects or withdrawal symptoms.

And the best news of all is that study after study has proven that simple relaxation exercises such as these are highly effective. A lot of research has been done to determine how to stop anxiety safely without medication. Meditation, self talk and visualization have all been studied, and results have been rated as excellent in the majority of cases. These natural methods to dissolve anxiety are easy to use, and require only a few minutes a day. Try them yourself and learn how to stop anxiety from controlling your life.
