Let's first try to understand why dogs bark in the first place.They bark because that is what they do. It's the way that they communicate thier fears, happiness or sadness.

But Bark They Must.

Yes, I know they bark to let you know some ones at the door or they are glad to see you but what about when they just bark and bark and bark? Why do they do that and what can you do to stop it so that you don't upset the neighbours

There are many reasons that dogs might want to bark. I suspect that one of the biggest causes is when you leave your dogs all on their lonesome for most of the day while you are away working at you job.

Frustration or just a lack of stimulation for all that doggy pent up energy that they like to expend on that very important past time of chase the Frisbee for instance will lead your dog to get rid of it. Guess what they may choose to get rid of it- yes that's right they will bark.

The Alpha Dog.

Your dog needs to know who the alpha or leader of his pack is. If you do not make it plain to him who is boss then he will take up that responsibility. The role of the alpha dog is to protect his territory and he will do this by sounding a warning to anyone or anything that comes to close.

How does he do this -you guessed it by barking.

You need to make sure that your dog understands that he is not the boss and does not need to protect his back yard from the mailman, kids coming home from school etc.

Have you ever told your dog to stop barking?

Does your dog fully understand that you only need him to bark a few times to let you know that someone is coming?

He does not need to carry on barking once you have been alerted does he, but you need to train him how to do this.

If you have never done this then there is a good possibility that you dog has just assumed that he can bark as much as he wants.

Firstly identify something that makes you dog bark. Now that he is barking, you need give him a command prompt (a chosen word for stop barking e.g. "quiet") and hold the treat in front of his nose.

Your dog's natural reaction will be to stop barking, as it will want to sniff the treat. As soon as he has stopped barking, give him the treat and add a lot of praise,good boy, well done- however, you praise him.

By repeating this but leaving a little longer between him stopping barking and you offering him the treat he will eventually associate that command "quiet" with stop barking.

You will be surprised just how quick your dog will pick this up. Eventually he will know that when you say, "quiet" that you want him to stop barking.
