How to Stop Snoring at Night
Tired of sounding like a chainsaw when you sleep? Learn how to stop snoring at night by understanding why you snore and what options you have to make your problem go away fast.
Snoring is, frankly, just a darn pain in the butt. If you are the one who snores, you don't always know it. All you have to go on is the fact that your wife or your husband harps (as in nags!) about it each and every morning because they were the ones who lost sleep.
It can be downright embarrassing, too, if you're caught doing it in any public places. Toddle off to sleep while on an airplane, waiting for your car's oil change to be completed, or while watching a boring movie at the theater with your spouse and you might suddenly be woken by the sound of nearby snickering.

What Causes Snoring
Why People Snore
Snoring is the result of tissue vibrations in your airway passage that are caused by your intake and outgo of air as it passes a blockage that has arisen in your nose, throat or mouth.
The blockage can be something as simple as congestion from a cold or allergies or it can be something physical like enlarged tonsils, a relaxed soft palate muscle, or extra weight that causes pressure on your neck while you sleep.
Some snorers actually have a condition called sleep apnea where they literally stop breathing for short periods of time throughout the night. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea but considering the health risks of halted breathing everyone who snores should see their doctor to have the condition checked.
IMPORTANT: If you don't know the cause of your snoring, you can't confidently find the product or products that will show you how to stop snoring at night.

Throat Exercises to Help Stop Snoring

For those where the snoring is caused by the musculature of the mouth or throat, there are benefits to using snoring exercises to strengthen and tighten those muscles so that the blockage issue improves or goes away completely.
The results of a clinical trial published in May 2009 show that even those with moderate sleep apnea benefited from the same types of oral exercises that speech pathologists use for those who have various speech impediments. The exercises involve working out the tongue, soft palate, cheeks, and jaw. As those muscles responded to the exercise, the severity of the apnea and the frequency of snoring were both improved.
Several snoring exercise programs have been developed that combine exercises targeting the specific muscles that contribute to snoring. One such program was developed by a man whose wife was a vocal coach who also used these exercises with her students to help them expand their range and depth of tone while singing.

What to do When Your Snoring Solution Doesn't Work
Don't give up if the snoring solution you chose doesn't work. First, give it a week or two to kick in, especially if you've chosen to use a stop snoring exercise program. Your muscles need time to show the positive effects of exercise. Make sure you have followed the list of things to avoid or change in your lifestyle while trying the product. If it still doesn't stop you from snoring after a couple of weeks, select another alternative from the list.
If your solution didn't work, it might also mean you need a combination of products to effectively stop your snoring problem. It is very possible to have more than one blockage that you are dealing with and, therefore, may need a product to treat each type of blockage.
Surgery is an option for some people who snore, although a medical procedure is often a last resort. Trying products and natural remedies is simply less scary for most folks. The type of surgical procedure applied to correct snoring depends, again, on the cause of the snoring. Not all snoring surgery solutions are covered by medical insurance as some are considered cosmetic. Your doctor can help you determine if surgery is an option for you.

Snoring Effects Sleep Quality and Relationships

Snoring affects both the person who snores and the one who sleeps with them. That's because noise is a significant sleep disturbance. In fact, sleep specialists often recommend that your bedroom be quiet an free of radio or television background noise specifically because of how the noise can cause your sleep to be less restorative.
Being interrupted all night long by the loud snoring taking place next to you goes beyond annoying. Experts say that if you sleep with a heavy snorer, you might be losing as much as 3 hours of restful sleep each night. That's sleep that could kep you from being grouchy the next day - sleep that could give you energy to tackle all your daily responsibilities - sleep your body simply needs in order to stay healthy.
There's no doubt the person who has the condition would love for it to go away. In fact, their sleep quality is probably being impacted, too, by their snoring and they may not realize that's even happening. If your body is working harder to get sufficient oxygen in while you are asleep, it can leave you feeling less than energized in the morning.
Not to mention the fact that anyone who snores would love to put a stop to the complaints from their spouse and to feel more confident that if they lay their head back on the sofa, they're not going to get a jab in the side to indicate they need to wake up and stop interrupting the TV show.
Fighting about snoring can lead to real problems between a couple. The trend usually goes from light complaining, to heavy complaining to separate beds or bedtimes. That does not do much for creating a happy, healthy marriage!
But how can one actually prevent their snoring? There are a number of snoring solutions on the market but there's a wide-spread misunderstanding about how those solutions work and who should be using which ones.
