There is no items in your lens about allergies probably because it is a wide ranging subject. My Jack Russell Terrier suffered with an allergy for years that also produced histocycomas or mast cell tumours. Blood tests, steriods and, antibiotics cost me hundreds of pounds but no cure or anything like it. But I got a tip to change his diet to raw meat bingo two days later no scrating.Tom

Great advice. Our German Shepherd gets fed and watered ok, but he rarely gets to go on a walk because I am too busy and my wife hasn't been well. I spend too much time trying to write instead of out with the dog getting some exercise.
  • pikachuFL Dec 8, 2010 @ 10:55 am | delete
I think there's an important component missing. Dogs also need a space of their own, either a mat to lie on, a dog house, a kennel, or whatever, and a place to play in or roam around. I don't think they should be confined in a cage all day. It's not good for them from a sanitation viewpoint or socially.

All dog owners and potential dog owners should read this lens! Great advice and doing this would make for happier, well-behaved pets and well-informed owners. Dogs are great - it's usually the owners that need the training. Whenever I hear people complain about their dogs I ask: how much exercise does your pup get? 9 times out of 10, the poor dogs are cooped up all day, bored to tears, and the owners expect them to lay down and sleep when they get home from work. They've been doing that all day!! Wake up - a long walk would benefit you both. If you can't let your pet out during the day for a potty break, hire a dog-walker. Great lens - lensrolled to my "Dog Friendly Gardens" lens. (Sorry for the rant - I'm very passionate about this topic ; )

Great lens! Thanks for sharing all this info.

A great lens, I really like the part about exercise. As a formerly chucky (ok fat) dog I know how important it is to make sure dogs eat good quality food and get their exercise. Now I eat right and walk 2 miles everyday. I feel so much better.

You totally deserve the Purple Star! This is a lot of great information that really helps people to become better pet owners. I am especially fond of the Dog Whisperer and all of his training. He has saved so many misunderstood dogs. Keep up the good work!

Some thing I see way toooo often is people leaving their dog in the vehicle in the summer with the windows cracked opened and no water. They are more afraid some one will steal their dog than their dog getting sick or dying from heat.

You are so right about dogs and exercise. I had an American Eskimo who wanted to go right back out as soon as we returned from a 1-hour hike. My lab/chow, on the other hand, was happy relaxing around the house after a relatively good walk. My current Belgian Shepherd seems very tired after our 1/2 hour walk but he's very robust during the walk. The vet said it's important that he exercise every single day. I got the impression it was especially important for the Shepherd breed. If you want more dog care tips, why not visit my lens at http://www.squidoo.com/dognutritionanddogcaretips

    Great information, nDee!

The only thing I disagree with is what you say about vaccinations.

The annual check up is of huge importance - you're right there!

But veterinary protocols now point to either not vaccinating adult dogs, or vaccinating them once every five years or three years.
  • Karendelac Oct 7, 2007 @ 9:34 pm | delete
    5 Stars for you.
You have articulately stated the BASICS.
