Nice lens. Every year for the last 8 years my strawberries grow on their own with little care. About all I have to do is weed, water, and keep trimming them back. If I don't the strawberries would control the entire garden and lawn. lol

I have learnt about the different groups which I was not honestly aware of, maybe I can do better this year and get a huge crop.

Nicely done! We have a fairly large strawberry patch (growing under and around our blueberries) but the chipmunks and birds get most of the berries. Oh well, we like to share!

    Nicely crafted lens, congrats :)
I'm trying to grow my strawberries from seed. So far they are about pinhead-size!
    Wish me luck

We just saw some strawberry plants at the store and wanted to try so we bought them on the spot. We planted according to the tag 2 weeks ago. We also bought some onions and mint and basil! We are having fun watching them all grow! I hope it is not too soon but we are already seeing little baby green strawberries this morning!

Wow! It's not early, it's just that spring is earlier than previous years, and I love to learn how fun you have growing strawberries and other veggies! It's a real pleasure! Hope you'll keep me update on how things are going with your home garden :)

Excellent information on how tot take care of a strawberry plant! I enjoyed watching your videos, too. We have tried growing strawberries in pots on our patio, but the birds and bugs usually get to the fruit before we do. Going to try again this spring!

    Hi Prosperity,
In June, i believe i got some useful comments from you regarding my trip down strawberry lane....I am from the Caribbean..Trindad to be exact and I tried growing the strawberry plant in my shaded garage to protect it from the blaring sun. That plant sent out about 3 daughter plants since, however the mother plant died :( and left me with 2 struggling daughter plants. the mother plant used to send out a new leaf almost every day.... the 2 daughter plants are about 3" high and are still attached to each other... How should i treat with my new babies since I'd hate to see them die out on me.... thanks a lot for your advice...PS I dont water them every day and they are placed in a pot of rich manure and a mixture of dirt.
  • prosperity66 Sep 20, 2010 @ 10:14 am | delete
    Hi :)
    Thanks for coming back :)
Well, I've read your dilemma and would say that if baby plants are twings - or side by side - I'd leave them together.
Actually, when mother plants have babies I leave them attached to their mom till the spring so that I make sure they're growing stronger. Since your mother plant died, leave sisters together till April next year - although I'm not sure it's the spring season in April in the Carribean.
Also, depending on the heat, water them each day - if the ground is still a bit wet just add less water but try to water them daily. If you see they don't like it, water them every other day but also make a point watering strawberries like clockwork.
Here weather was horrible this summer, cold, rainy but whenever we had one or two days without rain, I had to water them. Now, in September, I water them every other day, although Belgian weather waters our gardens at least four times a week, like clockwork either ;)
If you have more questions, get back to me, I'll try to help further.
    Cheers.

hi im trying to grow my strawberry plant in a pot in my garage...however im from the caribbean and i dont want it to be scorched in the hot sunshine here...however it seems to be doing nicely here and has sent out a few leaves every other day...however im noticing a few runners andim not sure what to do with them since this is my first time at planting strawberry esp. here in caribbean weather. do i cut these runners off as i would like to try and generate young plants from the mother plant?? i cant set them in the ground cause it is growing in a pot also i dont want to damage the plant .... please help :)

    clueless on strawberries
  • prosperity66 Jul 27, 2010 @ 1:38 pm | delete
    Hey :)
Congrats on your gardening hobbie! Growing strawberries in the garage when weather is too hot is a great idea!
As for the runners, don't cut it, just take another pot, fill it with soil and place next to your strawberry pot, direct the runners to the new pot, they'll grow into this one and you'll just have to cut the link between the mother plant and the runners when they'll form roots and grow.
You're then going to have another strawberry container, for free :D
Hope this helps otherwise, keep posting here, I'll reply without failing.
    Cheers.

I am wanting to get started growing strawberries and came here looking for info. Found this site to be very helpful. Hopefully, I'll be in the berries soon!! The only thing I didn't find was this.... when is it best to put out the new plants? Spring? Or can they be planted in the fall like some other kinds of perennial garden-type plants? Anyone help me?
  • prosperity66 Jul 10, 2010 @ 12:10 pm | delete
You can plant strawberries in September, spread a big coat of mulch on the plants so that they're protected for Wintertime. And planting strawberries in Fall will provide you a larger crop in next June.
Hope this helps - contact me via my profile if you need more information.
  • Willy Jul 11, 2010 @ 7:38 am | delete
Thank you for that information. I noticed I didn't post where I live and I didn't know if that made a difference. We live in south western Ohio, in zone 5. Does the planting and mulching in the fall still apply? Thanks again!
  • prosperity66 Jul 11, 2010 @ 4:28 pm | delete
Since I'm European, Ohio zone 5 doesn't mean anything to me but I'd say that if temperatures are under 5°F strawberry plants are at the risk to froze. Do perrenials survive to your winters? Perhaps the Alpine category of strawberries will suffer less from cold winters... But normally if runners don't survive to winter weather, normally mother plant should.
We've just got a -5°F winter here (from Nov till end of Feb) and all mother plants survived, even some runners - and I didn't add mulch (forgot about it). In the spring, when I went out, I thought strawberry plants died, but after one week without snow and frost, I saw the first new leaves (just one or two per plant).
Just to make sure, take a few mother plants and runners and plant them in a container, place the container in the garage or screened Arizona room or summer house, so that whenever others die during the winter, you can re-plant those you saved in containers. And let me know how they did :)

I used to grow tomatoes on my balcony, lol. It might sound weird, but it worked. This is an interesting lens, and I like strawberries.

OMG, now who doesn't love strawberries, I ask? Sorry I am without them there wings to offer up a blessing ... but, I think I know that you know how I feel about all that. Yumm Yumm! Strawberries, anyone?
  • southshoretees May 19, 2010 @ 5:50 pm | delete
I've always wondered how to grow these. I've had relative that have grown them, but they've never offered any (I'm assuming because they didn't yield much?). I'm sure they're far better than any kind you can get in the store. Thanks for the tips!
  • prosperity66 May 20, 2010 @ 2:31 am | delete
Now you know how to grow them and with one plant, in one year, you'll get a nice strawberry garden!

Thanks for all this info and the best time to plant strawberries in the garden. I'm sort of thinking about planting them against a fence, but it only gets about 6 hours direct sunlight.
  • prosperity66 Mar 31, 2010 @ 6:04 pm | delete
Hm... When I moved my strawberry plants and put them in the backyard, there were big trees that would hide the sun rays and indeed, I haven't gotten a very good harvest because of the lack of sun but I think there was less than 6 hours sunlight actually. Now that the trees are gone, strawberries always grow well. So maybe 6 hours are enough.
  • Demaw Mar 31, 2010 @ 12:33 am | delete
I will try to grow them indoors, Good info.
