"Throw Harder and Faster in Baseball or I Quit!"

I didn't think it was possible to throw harder and faster in baseball. I was given the above ultimatum by my coach on the first day of high school baseball tryouts and ever since then, I was determined to find a way to throw harder and faster in baseball.

If you don't learn how to throw harder and faster, you may have to quit. Not because you want to, but because pitchers and players who throw harder and faster are more effective. Every single pitcher in the MLB throws at least 90MPH and I know you can get there!

Unfortunately due to the reality of baseball, if you don't throw fast enough or hard enough, you will stop progressing through the ranks. At one point, you will not throw hard and fast enough to be effective. At this point, you have a choice: you can learn how to throw harder and faster or you will have to quit.

In this lens, I'll explore the ultimatum that almost every pitcher will face in his career, and don't worry you won't have to quit!

Long Toss to Throw Harder and Faster

The current revolution in the MLB

Long toss to throw harder and faster Starting in the early 1990's, major league pitchers were put on strict pitch counts to supposedly stop them from over throwing. Nowadays there's a trend in the MLB to let pitchers throw as long as their arm feels good.

Complete games in the MLB have been on the rise for 4 years as pitchers are allowed to throw deeper and deeper into games. The more interesting change though, has been teams' new approach to long toss.

Long toss should be an essential part to every pitchers workout. Long toss encourages players to throw with a greater range of motion. This greater range of motion translates to the mound as pitchers learn to throw harder and faster.

The 2 reasons behind this:
1) It conditions a player's arm to get accustomed to throwing hard over a longer period of time.
2) The greater ROM and flexibility allows greater force to be generated in the delivery.

If you're new to long tossing you should follow a baseball warm up. It is a strenuous activity and you may injure yourself if you are not properly conditioned.

Strength Training to Throw Harder and Faster

One undervalued pitching tip...

You turn on your TV to see Tim Lincecum throw a 95MPH fastball right past Prince Fielder. You think to yourself, "Wow, look how small he is. Strength clearly must not be a factor to throw harder and faster."

In high school baseball across the US, there are many uninformed coaches who restrict their pitchers from using the weight room. The fact is that pitchers can throw harder and faster from great strength workouts.

While Tim Lincecum may seem weak, he certainly is not. Baseball pitchers have very strong legs and core muscles. 95% of a pitcher's velocity is generated from leg and core movements. Naturally, having a stong core and legs will help you throw harder and faster.

Almost all amateur pitchers have insufficient strength to throw hard and fast, let alone throw a complete game shutout. This strength training program is the one I used to help throw harder and faster.

Why Coaches Say You Can't Learn to Throw Harder and Faster

Sometimes conventional wisdom is wrong....

Learn how to throw harder and faster in front of scoutsThere's an old saying in baseball that goes like this, "Velocity can't be taught. You simply can't learn how to throw harder and faster."

I'm sure you've heard that before, but if you found this page you surely didn't believe it. Conventional "wisdom" is passed down through generations of coaches. Sometimes it is helpful and sometimes it is a roadblock. I don't even want to think about how many careers that one line has ruined. Luckily, it won't ruin yours.

I believe this "wisdom" was started when pitching coaches realized they needed to cover their ass after they couldn't help increase pitchers' velocity. Eventually, it was just accepted that pitching coaches could take your money with very little improvement in the one area that matters.

Learn how to throw harder and faster in baseball and don't let your career be ruined by conventional "wisdom."
