Litter is just plain gross. I loved my cat, but I didn't love the litter he tracked through our home for 12 years, especially once we had a crawling baby.In addition to being yucky, smelly, and germ infested litter boxes are bad for the environment and the litter is costly.
There is a solution and it doesn't involve putting your indoor cat outside. You can potty train your cat. Cats are very intelligent and they like to stay clean. Those to qualities make it relatively easy to teach them to use the toilet. It may sound impossible at first...I laughed the first time someone told me their cat used the toilet because I thought it was a joke... but I've seen it with my own eyes. You really can teach a cat to use the toilet. The trick is you must be patient and take it slowly, one step at a time. But working towards having a litter free home really is worth the effort.
How to Toilet Train a Cat Step by Step
Potty train your cat by taking it one step at a time
- Move your cat's litter box to the bathroom.
- After a few days, add a book under the litter box to raise it up off the floor about 2 inches.
- After your cat comfortably uses the box at this height for 2 solid days, then raise it (safely) 2 more inches.
- Continue raising the litter box in this fashion until it is the same height as the toilet.
- Now get rid of the old litter box and use a litter box insert for your toilet. After your cat uses this consistently for a whole week, ditch the box completely. You now have a litter free home!

- At first it made me giggle but I'm also impressed at these cats using the toilet. Just one question.. has anyone taught them to flush afterwards? ;) Joking aside, this is a helpful look at how to go about training your cat to use a human toilet.

- Nope, but I have thought about it quite often. She is declawed in the front, so there is absolutely no way she is going outside. I am tired of finding litter all over the house and having to clean it up. The worst is when I have company over for dinner and we sit down and there is a piece of litter on the dining room table! Eww! I love my kitty so toilet training seems like the best route to take.
