Stop Barking Problems: How to Train Your Dog to Stop Barking
Stop Barking Problems. Thankfully, our neighbors were polite when they first complained about our new dog's excessive barking problems. Well, his excessive barking was driving us crazy, too! Find out what we learned about how to train a dog to stop barking—without jerking him, squirting him, or clicking.
Yes, my family (and our neighbors) were stressing out because of the barking problems of Sam—a loving (but noisy) mixed breed dog that we got at the local shelter. It so happens I've been listening for many years to a radio talk show called "Talkin' Animals With Dr. Dog" on 760KFMB in San Diego. When "Dr. Dog" (Dr. Dennis Fetko) announced on his radio show the publication of his dog behavior training ebook, Dr. Dog's FAST, EASY, FUN Behavior Solutions, I purchased a copy straightaway hoping to find his methods on how to train your dog to stop barking.
Since I was familiar with Dr. Fetko's training methods on stopping dog behavior problems from listening to him for years on the radio, I wasn't surprised to find the solution for Sam's barking problem that we were looking for. His methods include no harsh tactics. In fact he says, "In dog training, 'jerk' is a noun—not a verb!" In learning how to train your dog to stop barking, Dr. Fetko suggests first figuring out what is causing the barking problems to remedy those causes—and then training your dog not to bark with his fun and long-lasting stop dog barking behavioral therapy techniques.
Barking problems are unique among dog behavior problems—you don't want to eliminate barking--you just want to control it so that your dog lets out one bark to warn you and then he stops barking. We found that Dr. Fetko's methods on how to train a dog to stop barking were actually fun—that was the first time Sam ever got praised for barking! And what a relief for us to finally learn ways to train our dog to stop barking!

The Truth About Debarking to Prevent Barking Problems
The Truth About Debarking - Pros and Cons of this Surgical Method to Stop a Dog From Barking
Is Debarking a Good Method to Stop Barking Dogs? You may have heard about having the dog debarked, or a ventricular cordectomy as a way to solve dog barking problems. This is a minor surgical procedure in which the veterinarian severs or removes the vocal cords. The pro is that it's fairly immediate. The dog can't make much noise with sliced vocal cords. So there's not much of a waiting period for it to take effect.
The cons are that it's indiscriminate in that it removes all barking including the kind that protects us. It's often a temporary solution to dog barking problems or puppy barking problems, due to scar formation and it must be repeated--sometimes a number of times. The dog isn't totally silent, but the noise he makes--sort of like a loud, wheezy cough--is really pitiful. And worst of all, it does nothing to relieve that destructive process a barking dog falls victim to with the ulcers and immune system compromise.
In other words, debarking treats the symptom of excessive barking, not the problem. And it gets rid of some positive things at the same time. Also, there's always the risk of anesthetic. It's usually good to not anesthetize unless it's absolutely necessary.

Do Bark Muzzles Work to Solve Barking Problems?
What About Bark Muzzles to Stop Dog Barking Problems?
Will No-Bark Muzzles Solve Your Dog's Barking Problem?Another advertised solution that I've seen for dog barking is a bark muzzle. This one really gets me! I've never seen an effective muzzle that prevented barking yet allowed panting and drinking.
And maybe that's how it cures barking. If your dog can't pant to expel heat, or can't drink water, your barking problem won't last very long because the dog will be dead before you get home from work. Scratch a bark muzzle as a way to keep your dog from barking!

Is Excessive Barking harmful to your dog?
Excessive barking is physically and emotionally stressful to your dog.
Barking problems drive you and your neighbors crazy, but do they harm your dog? The answer is "yes"...First of all, excessive barking is a major reason that dogs are turned in to humane shelters. Secondly, your neighbor may become so frustrated with your barking dog that he throws a piece of poisoned meat into your yard.
Sure it's reprehensible, but many noise victims start reacting to barking as though it were Chinese water torture. One more time and they'll go nuts! So, barking problems can cost your dog his life...
Also, chronic barking can cause so much stress that physical damage is done to your dog. Research shows that hypertension, ulcers, and immune system damage can be traced to excess stress in dogs--and in people for that matter. Chronic barking can get a dog into a spiral of stressful behavior that he can't get out of without your help.

Barking Dog Facts
How Prevalent are Stop Dog Barking Problems?
How Many Dog Owners Have Dog Barking Problems?According to the 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Survey (NPOS), 63 percent of all U.S. households own a pet. This Survey reports that Americans own about 73 million dogs and 90 million cats. And it is estimated that 33% to 35% of dog owners complain of excessive barking with their dogs--that's a lot of dog barking problems!
It may surprise you to know that the dog's wild ancester, the wolf, is almost extinct--there are only about 100,000 wolves in the world today. Scientists believe that wolves bark much less than dogs. Wolves bark mainly as an alarm to warn other pack members or to threaten a potential intruder.
On the other hand, dogs bark in many other situations. So something happened during the evolutionary process--an event or behavior modification--to make dogs bark so much more than their ancestors--which has created the need for us to learn how to deal with barking dogs.

Dog Barking and No Bark Collar Survey
Opinions on Stopping Dog Barking Problems with the Anti-Bark Shock Collar
According to a recent survey by DogFriendlyBritain.co.uk, one third of owners of small dogs complain of their dog's nuisance barking and have tried some form of stop dog barking solution. This survey also revealed that these British dog owners are overwhelmingly against using the electric shock no bark collars. There were 640 British dog owners who responded to the survey on nuisance barking. Interestingly, small dog owners reported more problems with barking than did large dog owners. One third of small dog owners reported barking problems with their dogs, while only one fifth of large dog owners had the same complaint.
Almost seventy-five percent of these British dog owners favored a ban on electric shock collars.

Stop Dog Barking: Which Breeds Have More Barking Problems?
The Worst Breeds for Excessive Barking Problems
Which Dog Breeds Have More Excessive Barking Problems?A very interesting research project on problem barking was completed in 2003 by the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and Burke's Backyard analyzing reasons by breed for Australian dogs being turned in to shelters. (In Australia, they call this "dumping".) They provide this list so more people may avoid stop dog barking problems.
The breeds most frequently "dumped" for problem barking are (with most prevalent at top):
1. Maltese
2. Shih Tzu
3. Basset Hound
4. Australian Cattle Dog
5. English Springer Spaniel
6. Pomeranian
7. Bullmastiff
8. Australian Silky Terrier
9. Rottweiler
10. Fox Terrier
Another resource for details on problem dog barking by breed is a currently-out-of-print book, The Perfect Puppy by Benjamin and Lynette Hart. We have listed here the dogs from their list that are the most likely to have barking problems:
Yorkshire Terrier
Cairn Terrier
Miniature Schnauzer
West Highland White
Terrier
Fox Terrier
Beagle
Chihuahua
Silky Terrier
Pekinese
Miniature Poodle
Toy Poodle
Now, this is not to say that you will have to stop dog barking with all of these breeds. They simply have breed tendencies to excessive barking and may require extra time and expertise on your part to stop dog barking.

Today's Stop Dog Barking News on Google
Articles from www.Google.com News on Dog Barking Problems
One neighborhood says the community can't sleep because of one nieghbor's barking dogs. Now, they want something done.
Uptown Memphis is looking up these days. New houses are being built, old one's are being renovated, and crime is low.
But, residents say there's one problem that won't go away.
James Buchanan hears it every day he says it sounds like the dogs are in the house with him.
The dogs, around 10-to-15 of them, just a few feet from Buchanan's backyard.
"You can't even bring people here to entertain. They say 'what is that noise going on back there'," says Buchanan. "Sometimes it's like a symphony over there," he adds.
And, it's not only during the day when Buchanan hears the dogs.
"I'm a light sleeper. You hear these dogs. How do you sleep," says Buchanan.
Recently, Buchanan videotaped the dogs barking overnight.
The house sits on 5th street in Uptown.
Action News 5 reporter Nick Paranjape was about to knock on the door to talk to the owner, until he noticed the chained up Rottweiler guarding the front door.
"It comes up in every meeting," says neighbor Julie Ray.
Ray owns a home and a business in Uptown. She also co-chairs the Uptown Community Association.
Ray says the barking dogs are a hot topic with residents.
She's called police, code enforcement, and animal services.
Ray adds, "we're running into dead ends with every single entity. In fact, at one point I contacted PETA but they won't get involved with police matters."
Police have cited the dogs owner for violating the noise ordinance.
So far, it hasn't solved the problem.
Buchanan and Ray believe the dogs are used for fighting, although they have no proof.
We did call Memphis Animal Services Operations Manager, Tony Butler. He says they did visit the home in November of last year.
They have no records of neglect. Butler did say he'll send another officer to the house Thursday morning.
