Let the training commence!!

"I was not the sort of boy who could train a dragon with a mere lifting of an eyebrow. I was not a natural at the Heroism business. I had to work at it. This is the story of becoming a Hero the Hard Way." From his initial challenge-Hiccup and his fellow warriors-in-training must each pluck a dragon from a "Dragon Nursery" where 3,000 young critters are hibernating-the likable lad faces a host of hurdles and beats tremendous odds to emerge triumphant. After selecting a tiny, toothless dragon ("I shall call [my dragon] Fireworm," says nemesis Snotface Snotlout. "What are you going to call yours, Hiccup? Sweetums? Sugarlips? Babyface?").

Early sketches - cool!

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third

Voiced by Jay Baruchel

Hiccup is the heir to the chief, but no one would ever guess that. He's small, not at all as ferocious as one would expect of a viking and a little to prone to that thinking stuff. But it's the thinking that allows him to save the day and truly become a hero.

Stoick the Vast

Voiced by Gerard Butler

Chief of the clan, Stoick is the ultimate viking - ferocious, fearless and fool-hearty. He doesn't quite understand Hiccup, but is proud of him just the same.

Fishlegs

Voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse

Hiccup's best friend, almost by default. Fishlegs is tiny, timid and even less of a viking than Hiccup. The pair band together as the outcasts of the clan's boys.

Astrid

Voiced by America Ferrera

Snotface Snotlout

Voiced by Jonah Hill

Among the boys of the clan, Snotface is the most likely viking. And he knows it. In fact, as Hiccup's cousin, he'd like nothing more than to move Hiccup out of the way so he can move in line for the clan chiefship. But time proves that physical capabilities aren't all that's needed if you're going to lead.

Gobber the Belch

Voiced by Craig Ferguson

The dim (but large and loud) instructor for the boys of the clan on all things viking.

Changing the Story?

Hey! There are no girls in the book version of How to Train Your Dragon! (Unless you count Hiccup's mom and a couple of the dragons.) But there's this Astrid character added to the movie. Hmmm. Is that kosher?

Does it matter that they changed the story?

Nah. I kinda like the extra characters.

Adding a girl just screws everything up!
