A Great Way To Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle!

Many of us are doing our part to recycle and "be green". But did you know that some items you may not think to recycle can actually be transformed into works of art? In this lens I will introduce you to Terracycle, a company that turns trash into treasure with the help of consumers!

What Is Terracycle?

Terracycle is a company that puts a whole need meaning to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Their mission is to help eliminate waste by recycling and upcycling previously non-recyclable items. With their various collections programs (most of which are free!) they are able to convert this waste into a large variety of products and materials. In fact, there are over 1,500 various products available from major retailers that Terracycle recycles. Many of the items collected also offer a donation amount per item to go towards charity! The company was founded in 2001 by a Princeton University Freshman by the name of Tom Szaky. Terracycle started off producing organic fertilizer and organic garden products, and has now become one of the fastest growing "green" companies around!

What Does Terracycle Do With My Trash?

Terracycle upcycles and recycles your trash into various products and items. "Upcycling" is the process of taking an item you would otherwise trash or even recycle, and making it into a newly usable item!

Some of the great items that come out of your trash are plant food, insulated coolers, fencing, fertilizer, picture frames, backpacks, totes, lunch boxes, scrapbooks, clipboards, coasters, clocks, and the list just goes on and on!

How You Can Get Involved?

Terracycle is a great way to do something good for the planet and you can do this either as a household, as a group or organization, or both! Why not get your local schools to participate with a collection drive or see if your place of employment wants to initiate a Terracycle program of their own? Not only does it help spread the word about recycling, it gets people talking and involved in doing something good!

My brother's school does this thanks to him heading the project. Great lens!

Looks like a great idea, but I'm in the Uk. We do have freecyle, where you can give away unwanted stuff to someone who needs it, and find stuff you're after for free.

This sounds really interesting! A small flaw: The links you posted to the company's website don't seem to work. No worries, I will find it, but I thought you might want to fix this. Thanks for sharing, in any case!
