Everyone has a passion, and with the right preparation you might just be able to turn it into your living. Give yourself the best chance to turn it into a profitable business by knowing exactly what you're getting into.

This guide gives you advice on how to make the dream a reality.

Know your market

Know your market

Get out there and discover whether what you have is what people want. Pitch ideas, find out what your target market likes and doesn't like and, most importantly, how much they are willing to pay.

Gaining market knowledge helps you decide how to target your business. If you're looking for a niche in the surf wear industry you should speak to fellow surfers. Find out what they want and what they think is missing in the market place.

Use your strengths and improve weaknesses

Sell your passion! If you know that your enthusiasm, confidence and communication skills are your strongest asset then use them. Front the business yourself and be a leader. It may be management, sales or organisation that you excel in. Whatever it is make sure you use it!

Knowing your weaknesses is as important as knowing your strengths. For example, you might be operating in an industry where English is the common language. Business English lessons are a great way of improving your skills.

Plan, plan, plan!

Plan and scheduleOnce you've decided to take the plunge, the planning must begin. You need to know everything about your market, financial considerations, operational values and the direction of your business.

Find out who your competitors are, your set up costs and whether you need staff. Also research what you need to do to make a profit and how you want to make this happen. Developing the business plan is the first step and then you can start putting your passion into practice.

Value your values

Follow your passionNever lose sight of your passion and reasons for getting into it in the first place. Stay true to yourself and your values. This might be a particular direction you set the company in or even an ethical belief you laid down at the outset.

Being an innovator may have been an early goal. Stay with this and always look for ways to develop new products or services for your customers. For example, you might develop new scuba diving technology or teaching methods.

Move with the times

Being flexible is a key component of a successful business. As the market changes you need to change with it. Talk to customers, industry experts and fellow business owners to share ideas.

You may be running a successful scuba diving travel business. Listen to experts and diving enthusiasts to find new exotic diving hotspots. You'll keep the business moving and can stay ahead of the game.

The time may come when you start to expand into different countries and need to improve your English. You can do this easily by enrolling on a course at a London school of English.
