What Is A Chocolate Fountain?

chocolate fountainSimply put, a chocolate fountain (also called chocolate fondue fountain) is an electric gadget with 3 main parts: the top dish, the central column that holds the dish, and the small base at the bottom of the piece that has the engine.

The way the fountain effect is achieved is by filling the bottom part with melted chocolate, which will then be pushed to the top so that it overflows. Then once the chocolate is down, it gets pushed back up again, just like the water is pushed upwards in a real fountain.

You can put various sweet things around it that can be dipped in the chocolate. I love to use fresh strawberries (time of year permitting) to dip in the chocolate. It's really yummie!

Choosing Your Chocolate For The Fountain

“When dipping the chocolate, it can get messy, so have paper towels around!”

How To Assemble Your Chocolate Fountain

To put your chocolate fountain together ready to be used, there are a few steps to follow. It's not difficult, but in case you don't have any instructions (especially if you rented yours and didn't come with instructions), this is how most fountains are assembled together:
  • 1Screw the column into the bottom base. The column is what pushes your melted chocolate to the top.
  • 2Put together the top dishes. Depending on the fountain type you get, you can have several layers of dishes (mine is with 3 layers). You put the biggest one at the bottom and the smallest in size at the top. Make sure to put the largest dish with the hollow part looking upward. The rest of them will go with the hollow part downward..
  • 3In the meantime melt your chocolate. I use my microwave for it as it goes extremely fast.
  • 4Once the fountain is assembled, pour the chocolate cream into the base until it almost reaches the top rim of the fountain base.
  • 5Now plug it in and switch on the button.
  • 6If you did the steps above well, you should hear the fountain engine working and soon you'll see the chocolate climbing to the top of the fountain to be overspiled in the dish.

Important!

First have the chocolate in the fountain and then start the engine. The auger is designed to work for 2-3 hours before it starts to overheat, so don't have it running before you have your melted chocolate in it already.

How To Clean Your Chocolate Fountain

Cleaning your chocolate fondue fountain is quite easy. You need some really warm or even hot water, but beware! never dip the base of the fountain the water. It has an electrical engine part, and like all electrical objects it should stay clear of water.

* Clean the fountain right after you switched off the machine. Don't let the chocolate harden in it because you'll have a tough time cleaning it afterwards.

* You first need to empty the chocolate from the fountain (take care, it can get messy!). I use a spatula to take out all the chocolate from it by simply scraping it out.

* Take apart every piece from the fountain and clean them (except the base). These parts are usually dishwasher safe, so once the chocolate is out, you can put them in the dishwasher (except the base, of course).

* For the base, you can add water in the bowl for cleaning, but make sure that you don't actually plunge in the entire base in the water.

* As for the discarded chocolate, you can either reuse it for some dessert or simply throw it away.
Important!

Don't throw the chocolate down the drain as it will clog it!

Love that video at the end! Ha ha, but the idea does appeal to me yes - not to dip fruit in though, that's too healthy!
