Did You Know That You Can Lower Your Blood Pressure Just By Breathing?

Yeah, but breathing RIGHT!

Take a moment now and just imagine what life would be like if you could gradually but consistently feel calmer and didn't have to worry about some things, such as high blood pressure. Not long ago, I couldn't. I thought that it just was how things were supposed to be.

With a stressing job, I began developing these nasty headaches that would last for hours. And they got stronger over time. So I went to the doctor and he told me that I had high blood pressure, which, in turn, caused the headaches. Naturally, he prescribed me some pills but after a while of taking them, I began to experience some uncomfortable side-effects (fatigue and insomnia, mainly).

So I began looking for natural, drug-free treatments first, hoping that something would work. After being at it for a while, I found something that did. I learned how to use deep breathing lower my blood pressure. And the best of all is that once you've learned it, you've got it!

The Relationship Between Breathing And Blood Pressure

When I first heard of this breathing method, I was somewhat skeptical. Yes, I had heard that some people reported that they felt better after some minutes of deep breathing, but I thought it was merely a placebo effect.

But then I began doing some research on my own. I was surprised to find medical reports dealing with this exact technique. And even more so when the results showed that it worked on more than 3/4 of the people who tried it.

I didn't quite understand the specifics of the theories involved behind the processes that link breathing and blood pressure, but one thing I knew for sure: there was serious research being done to explain this phenomenon. And so, I decided to give it a chance.

The Right Breathing Patterns

I didn't know where to begin, so I contacted a friend of mine who is into yoga and all of that. She told me that actually, breathing is a very important part of her practice. Controlled breathing literally diminishes your heart rate and normalizes your blood pressure.

But in order to do that, she said, you must learn to breathe properly. And that means learning to breathe deeply and slowly using your abdomen and not so much your chest.

Also, the rate at which you breathe is important. You have to lower the number of breaths per minute without feeling suffocated. This all sounded very nice, but how could I start to actually implement this knowledge?

My Daily Breathing Practice

My friend suggested that I should start by setting aside 10 minutes every day to practice. I did that, but I still didn't know if I was doing it correctly. So I went on to see if I could find something that could guide me throughout the entire process.

The good news is that I found a useful tool. It is a series of audio tracks that have special cues which tell you when to inhale and when to exhale. And in the background there is a selection of musical recordings which not only make the 15 minutes that I spend doing this relaxing, but also enjoyable.

The results are really satisfying. My blood pressure is now most of the time within the normal range. I will keep practicing and I'm sure that eventually I'll be able to throw the blood pressure gauge away (or sell it on ebay, hehe). Anyway if you would like to know more about this system, then check these deep breathing techniques for more info and a demo.
