Google Plus Guide - Social Networking, Business Pages, and more

Ranked #496 in Internet, #23,743 overall

A practical guide, and resource list, for Google Plus

I like the clean, simple interface of Google Plus, and I find it relatively uncomplicated to use.
Also I feel Google Plus has that quality that gets you hooked onto it pretty quickly.

The more I've used Google Plus the more I've felt the need for a good Google Plus guide which would help me reach a good comfort level on google and get me up and running, quick and easy.

I've found that the only option for anyone wanting to know all about Google Plus is to search around and refer to ten different sources, and browse through hundreds of links more, to gain a good comfort level on Google Plus

I've created this guide, to provide you with good, practical knowledge, to help you use Google Plus like a pro, and to provide you with the best resources on Google Plus, in one place, so you don't have to do any mammoth searching, the way I had to.
Hope you'll find this guide helpful.

What is Google+ (Google Plus)

Google+ is a social network, like Facebook.
But unlike Facebook, Google+ is a social network which is gaining millions of users, fast.

One of the major reasons for this is that Google+ provides much better social interactions, with great control over sharing of data and maintaining privacy.

Here's a great video on Google+

What is Google+ and do I need it?

Why use Google+ (Google Plus)

Google+ has a clean user interface, and has very visible controls when it comes to sharing information - thru circles and 'Public' etc tags
Google+ also offers better control in sharing - you could share with only family, only friends, only colleagues and so on depending on the circles you create

Also apart from networking, what I've found is - your public posts in Google+ get indexed quickly, they are integrated seamlessly into Google search, and they get a good ranking too in search results.
So Google+ is also a good platform to talk about what you love, and to have your content reach people.

Google Plus Circles

The problem with today's online services is
"We only want to connect with certain people at certain times, but online we hear from everyone all the time."
"Every online conversation (with over 100 "friends") is a public performance, so we often share less because of stage fright."
"We all define "friend" and "family" differently - in our own way, on our own terms - but we lose this nuance online."
- excerpt from the Official Google Blog

Google+ Circles helps you organize everyone according to your real-life social connections - say, 'family,' 'work friends,' 'music buddies,' and 'alumni'.

Google Plus Games

"Google Plus gives you control over where you see games, how you play them and with whom you share your experiences.

On the Games page you can see the latest game updates from your circles, browse the invites you've received and check out games that people you know have played recently.
The Games page is also where your game accomplishments will appear. So you can comfortably share your latest high score - your circles will only see the updates when they're interested in playing games too.

If you're not interested in games, it's easy to ignore them. Your stream will remain focused on conversations with the people you care about."
- excerpt from the Official Google Blog

How to import your Facebook followers list and contacts into your Google+ profile

You'll need a Yahoo mail, and a Gmail account for this.
Broadly, the steps involved are, you first transfer your Facebook contacts to your Yahoo mail. Then transfer the contacts from Yahoo mail to your Gmail account. And from Gmail into your Google+ profile.

Here's what you need to do:
Log into your Yahoo mail account
Click on Contacts
Then click on Import Contacts
You should see the Facebook icon, click on it
Follow the instructions on screen, to connect Yahoo with your Facebook account, and begin the import of your Facebook contacts into your Yahoo mail account
Once complete, in your Yahoo mail account click on Contacts
Click on Actions -> Export All
And export the contact list from Yahoo, as a Yahoo CSV file
Save the CSV file on your desktop
Next log into your Gmail account
In your Gmail, click on Contacts
Click on Import Contacts
Select the Yahoo CSV file you saved on the desktop, and start the import process (ensure you import the contacts into a new group in your Gmail, to keep them separate from the rest of your Gmail contacts)
Once the import is complete, click on Contacts
Select the group of contacts which you've just imported
Click on More, and click on Export
Export the contacts list as a Google CSV file and save it to your desktop
Now log into your Google+ profile
Click on the Circles icon
Click on Find people
Click on Import address book
Select the Google CSV file you've saved to the desktop, and all your Facebook contacts will now be in Google+!

How to create a shorter, custom link for your Google+ profile

You can create a custom, and shorter version of your google+ profile link, like mine http://gplus.to/RenascencePub
The gplus.to links are only meant for google+ profiles, and so are easily recognized.

Your google+ profile link is something like this
https://plus.google.com/107086....a long list of numbers
Now thats a really long link, difficult to communicate, and not easy for others to memorize.

Here's what you need to do to create your custom link:
1) Visit http://gplus.to/
2) Type in a nickname of your choice - this will be the part of your custom link that comes after http://gplus.to/ (like in my example its RenascencePub)
3) Type in your google+ id - this will be the really long list of numbers, that are present in your google+ profile link
4) Click on add, and if the nickname you selected isnt taken yet, you should have your new, custom, shorter google+ profile link!

Please note : Choose your nickname carefully and ensure its spelled correctly.
This is a one time thing. Once created, you can't create another gplus.to link for your google+ profile
