I do like Twitter for my websites and it works well for Squidoo but I don't do it as often as I used to. I used to be totally obsessed with Twitter. What bugs me a lot about people is those who follow to then delete you later. I systematically delete them. I figure no one is that interesting. I wonder about that sometimes but it just make me so mad when they do that. Then again I don't follow every last person that follows me either.. some of the SEO stuff becomes too much for an artist. Too funny though I don't really fret about it all either. Like Facebook most are people that I have no idea who the heck they are. LOL

Hi Paul, This is good, useful info about Twitter. I must admit I find it rather boring when I see one or two people doing nothing but tweeting the same link over and over - so that's good advice you give regarding the promotional aspects of Twitter. I don't use it as much as I did before, but I still pop over once in a while.

I never could figure out why people would want to twitter - who wants to know you just ate lunch? I can't see the point. I guess I'm just too old-fashioned. I may change my mind. But by then everyone will be onto something else.
  • desertdarlene Feb 4, 2012 @ 5:53 pm | delete
I've been "Twittering" since just about when they started. I do agree, don't just mindlessly post links to your blogs, lenses, etc. I've had to unfollow good friends because not ony were they posting nothing but links, they were posting the same links over and over again. I also don't like it when people post updates constantly all day. A few a day is good, 100 a day can turn people off.

One of the best ways to leverage twitter if your just starting out is to figure out first what kind of followers you would like to start to try and cultivate that is relevant to what you are doing.

Once you find the followers, its important to seek out the influencers in that particular niche and become helpful to them and start to engage the influencers with helpful tweets and contribute great content in short little burst on a consistent basis without being a spammer.

If you can do this and actually develop a good relationship with 4 or 5 of the top influencers in your niche and have a somewhat regular tweet session with them, the influencers tribes will start to look at you as someone special as well and naturally start to follow you to see what else you are doing.

Human nature is to be curious and what better way to let people satisfy their curiosity than to provide curious tidbits that stimulate the mind.

Like your lens I indeed learnt a lot from it.

Tons of great info, I am bookmarking this one to read in greater depth later. As a woman of many diverse interests I never can seem to get the hang of social networking - how do I keep from alienating my readers by talking about multiple interests? Should I have multiple Twitter accounts, such as one for art and one for Squidoo?

Thank you for this lens! You are now book marked in my Squidoo folder. :) I have tried internet marketing in the past and a few things worked here and there. But after about 4 years I think things are clicking and making sense. With the right tools, including Twitter, I believe you can be successful with internet marketing.

Twitter can be great for connecting with people and if a proper strategy is implemented you can find people with similar interests which does lead to new business. A lot of people don't understand how to use twitter too much and people view you as a spammer, too little and its not worth it. Automation tools can help you stay on top of things. BTW you can follow me @bdr_london

Great lens! A few years ago, one of my grandkids said, "Gram, it's great that you're on Facebook, but if you really want to know what's going on, you need to be on Twitter!" I replied, "But I don't know how Twitter works!" I made him show me how, but this is much more in-depth!
  • deyani Sep 21, 2011 @ 7:37 pm | delete
Congratulations on LotD, a very well deserved lens.

I use twitterfeed and set up the RSS from my squidoo lens automatically, so everytime I publish new lens, twitterfeed will tweet the link of the new lens to my twitter account. Because it's done automatically, I rarely check my twitter account, so missed out on lots of messages sent from my followers. Need to get proactive, reply to their messages and read other people's tweets. This lens has absolutely opened my eyes.

Thank you so much to all the people who have been kind enough to comment on the lens so far on the day that Squidoo featured it as LOTD.

I am very flattered and overwhelmed by the kindness of the response that there has been. The lens was originally created back on 1st January 2009 (must have been a quiet New Year's Eve!) and since then has stood the test of time and is a testament to the power of Squidoo.

At the time of writing there are 1.13 Billion results for the keyword phrase "How to Use Twitter" "(without the quotes) when viewed from the UK. This lens has sat at the top of the pile for an awful long time and even outranks Twitter's Pages! So thank you Squidoo for the opportunity and thank you to all those who have been so kind.

I have used Twitter slightly longer than I have been a lensmaster (3 years) and I never used any tricks to get followers, but I used Twitter to advertise my dubious ventures. It works about the way you've presented here and is a good resource for anyone wanting to announce their presence on the web. I am gypsyman27 on Twitter as well. See you around the galaxy...

    Hey, Paul

Great lens and a lot of useful information. I guess you can always learn something no matter how much you think you know.

As an aside, I noticed that you are ranked number 1 in Google for the keyword "how to use twitter". I guess a little SEO and a lot of great content like you have in your lens goes a long ways.

Congrats on your success. Maybe you should do a lens about how to get your Squidoo lens on page 1 in Google... just a thought.

    David

Always something new to learn with Twitter. I use it all day long and have set up many marketing clients on it and still, I am amazed at its potential and the resources out there. Thanks for making such an information packed page!

I've been avoiding Twitter. I love Squidoo, and have dabbled here and there online, but Twitter's popularity has always been a mystery to me. Your lens makes it much more understandable. I will have to give it another try! Thanks!!
