How to use Web Analytics to spy on your competitor?

Improving Pay Per Click and SEO campaign

You can use Google Analytics to beat your competition by anticipating changes in traffic and also getting ideas from your competition's keywords. However before you can analyze your competitor's efforts you should try analyze your own site so that you know what you are looking for when it comes to beating out your rival.

Why is keyword research so important? Analyzing your own keywords helps your understand what your customer are looking for. Once you have found these valuable keywords you can improve your Pay Per Click campaign and use the right SEO strategies to attract more targeted visitors.

Before using Web Analytics

Have A Clear Call To Action

The first thing you need to do is list your own goals and primary metrics as set out by the program. You should know your primary and secondary goals including what it is that you have always wanted to accomplish with your Pay-Per-Click marketing efforts.

- Did you want them to buy your newsletter subscription
- Do you want visitor buy a service or product?
- Is it page per views that you need?
- Or perhaps you need them to click on an affiliate link.

You can then set your own perimeters for the information that you need to know.
Setting your perimeters is also called taking stock of what you want your metrics to accomplish you with once all analysis has been completing. Tracking those metrics provides you with the information that you need to know to compare yourself to your competitor.

How Seasonal Keywords Can Affect Your Business

When looking at your analytics make sure that you realize that time passes and that these figures change on a seasonal basis. The ability to anticipate changes to your account and change bids or conversion types because you understand the cycles and rhythms of your business will give you a competitive advantage. For instance if you are selling membership to a Toy Train Discount club you will probably notice that business is much better closer to Christmas.

What Metrics of your Web Analytic Software Are Important

Your first job is to create a chart that outlines your goals and primary metrics.
This means looking at all of the results your analytics have to offer including:

- Click-through rate
- Time spending
- Total conversions
- Cost per action
- and other information that is important to you.

You should then segment those metrics by type such as:

- Adwords Search
- Adwords Content
- Adwords Placements
- Yahoo Search
- Yahoo Content
- Microsoft Live Search
To make a good assessment you also might want to think about time frames such as day, week, month and year.

How to improve SEO campaigns with Web Analytics

And beat your competitors

Once you have all of this information look for patterns so that you can optimize your account with SEO Marketing in new ways. For instance, if you see a pattern that more people are buying on a Saturday than a Sunday then you want to optimize your efforts on those days. You can also spy on your competition by looking at their ads and then stealing their keywords and keyword statistics. You can then test those keywords on your own site.

It's pretty easy to run a report each month, look to see how different keywords are performing and then change bids as necessary. That's how most campaigns are successfully run! Don't let the traffic go to your competition. Start giving yourself the advantage by studying your analytics now!

I use Google Analytics and webmaster tools. Very useful. Not using web analytic to launch your marketing campaigns is like shooting in blind. Unless you have unlimited cash, you are wasting lots of money if you are not using analytics at all.
