Yoga Tools to Support Your Practice
When starting a Yoga Practice the postures may feel awkward and unachievable. That's okay! First, never think that you have to look like the cover of the Yoga Journal magazine. Your Yoga session is just for you and how your unique body moves. Second, there is help! With the proper use of Yoga Props and accessories you can comfortably find your place in any yoga pose!
The Perfect Yoga Mat
Stay Comfortable and Slip-Free with a Durable Yoga Mat
A Yoga Mat serves several purposes. One is to provide you with a clean, cushioned area to practice. Mats comes in a variety of thickness, so if you want a little extra cushion (especially for those poses on the knees), then look for a thicker mat. The second purpose is to keep you from slipping. The rubbery, textured surface of the mat helps to hold your palm stable in poses like Downward-Facing Dog . Third is to provide your personal sacred space for practice. The more you practice on your own mat, the more it is imbued with your own yogic energy. There's nothing like having a difficult day, picking up your yoga mat for class, and feeling "ahhhhhhh" comforted and ready for yoga.
Jade Harmony Professional 68-Inch x 3/16-Inch Yoga Mat (Olive Green)

LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
The Jade Harmony Yoga Mat is my personal favorite. My hands get pretty sweaty even in a mild class and the Jade Mat keeps me from slipping. I purchased four other mats before I tried a Jade and I was won over!
Other great features: They come in 8 yummy colors! The Jade Mat is extremely durable and will last you several years of regular practice. The mats come in extra-long and extra-wide! For a taller person like me, it's great to have the extra few inches to stretch out and not have to constantly reposition myself on the mat.

Lift Yourself Up with a Yoga Block
Give Your Body the Extra Lift and Support with a Yoga Block or Two
I always have Two Yoga Blocks available for my practice. No matter how advances you are - yoga blocks are valuable. The main benefits of a Yoga Block is to give yourself an extra bit of lift in a pose. For beginner's it may not be comfortable to fold forward to touch the mat. Having blocks handy gives your hands the lift, so you can comfortably keep your alignment and form. Blocks also help with balance. I have been practicing for 3 years and still like to have one available when going into Half Moon Pose .

LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
I purchased my very favorite blocks from the Yoga Accessories company (available at this link). They come in 7 fabulous colors (forest green is my favorite!). They are comfortable, durable, and a very reasonable price.
Yoga blocks primarily comes in 2 widths: 3 inches and 4 inches. I prefer the wider 4' block as it helps better with balancing poses, and gives my hands a firmer place to rest. When I have used 3" blocks I always felt wobbly and unstable.

Yoga Straps Help Give Us That Extra Leverage & Deeper Stretch
Yoga Straps help in two ways: Giving the student a little extra bit of length and leverage and to support the body in poses. Can't reach out and touch your toes? No problem. No need to wrench your back trying - use a strap! Wrap it around the ball of your foot and you can keep your back in safe alignment while you stretch. Want a little more leverage with a particular stretch? Use the strap to get yourself into just the right position. Also, the strap can help bind and support the body in several restorative poses, such as Reclining Big Toe Pose.
YogaAccessories (TM) 8' Cinch Buckle Cotton Yoga Strap - Purple
Amazon Price: $5.99 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
Some things to consider when selecting a Yoga Strap: Length, Construction and Color. Common strap lengths are 4,6, and 8 feet long. My preference (if you are only going to buy one strap) is to get the longest one available. It's discouraging to read about a new restorative pose in Yoga Journal and find out your strap is too short to support it. Construction - the loops and attachments are made of metal or plastic. I find plastic safer in the yoga classroom. It is less likely someone will get cut or poke an eye with the plastic attachments. Finally, color - bring some life into your practice with a little color!
Once again I selected a Yoga Accessories product for these reasons. They have all lengths available, they offer plastic attachment options, and they come in 5 different colors!

Stay Supported & Comfortable with a Yoga Blanket
Give a Boost to Your Seat or Pad Aching Joints
I always have two yoga blankets close by during my personal practice. Yoga blankets perform 3 main functions. The first is to give you a bit of lift in some postures. When sitting in for initial yoga meditation at the start of class, or during pranayama, it is often comfortable on the back to sit up on a blanket to let the pelvis tip forward and prevent hunching forward. Next, Yoga Blankets provide cushion to body parts in certain poses. Extra padding is often helpful in poses like Low Lunge. Finally, a Yoga Blanket is perfect when the practice cools down and you'd like some extra warmth. Cover up with a cozy blanket during final relaxation.
Mexican Blanket Made in Mexico for Throws, Yoga or Meditaion
Amazon Price: $17.98 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
Things to consider when purchasing a yoga blanket: Thickness, durability, and color. A thin blanket is not going to give you much boost, cushion or warmth, so look for a blanket with some substance. As they are an accessory to an exercise practice you'll need to be able to wash it. You'll be sitting, standing, rolling, and crunching up the blanket during practice, so make sure it is made of durable material. And finally - color! Nothing brings a little extra spark into your practice like a splash of color! Rogers blankets come in 8 different color patterns.

Restore and Refresh With a Yoga Bolster
Support Your Body During Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga
A nice, big cushiony Yoga Bolster is essential for a practice that may include Yin or Restorative yoga. Even if you don't practice either of those styles Yoga Bolsters make great "seats" during class or meditation. Restorative Yoga introduces poses in which you melt into the posture and... relax. Bolsters often provide that extra cushion and support to really melt into the pose. In Legs Up the Wall Pose the student can really let his or her back drape over the bolster for a relaxing opening pose.
YogaAccessories (TM) MAXSupport Deluxe Rectangular Cotton Yoga Bolster - Blue
Amazon Price: $37.99 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
Bolsters come in many sizes and styles. Initially I made the mistake of buying a bolster that was too small and found myself rolling off of it in many poses. Small bolsters are good for portability if you need to bring props to a training class or seminar. At home and in class, I prefer a nice large bolster that will completely support the poses.
This bolster is especially nice because it has a removable cover! After several sessions you can slip off the cover and put it in the wash. It comes in 5 rich colors and has handles on both ends when you need to carry it around.

Keep From Slipping with a Colorful Yoga Towel
Even the most Sticky Yoga Mats May Become Slippery in a Hot Yoga or Bikram Class
One of the most valuable purchases I've made for Yoga is a non-slip yoga towel. Yoga classes get sweaty and even the stickiest yoga mats can get slippery with enough sweat. There is not much more disruptive than being in a poses and feeling like your hands or feet are slipping out from under you. YogiToes (and the Manduka version eQua) eliminate this problem. One side of the towel is covered in tiny skidless rubber dots which keep the towel from moving on your mat. The towel itself is thin, lightweight and super absorbent!
Yogitoes Skidless Premium Mat Size Yoga Towel (Blue)
Amazon Price: $51.00 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
LOTUS-MALAS.COM REVIEW:
YogiToes comes in three different sizes: Regular Mat Size, Extra Large Mat Size (for those longer mats), and Hand Towel Size.
I really enjoy the Hand Towel size as I can carry it around with me everywhere and I can easily slide it off the mat when I don't need it; however, I do sometimes accidentally kick it off the mat when I am moving around. The mat size YogiToes eliminates this problem and will stay put on the mat.
You can go WILD with color as YogiToes comes in a Huge Variety of colors (over 26!) and even comes in Deity Themes (such as Shiva, Ganesh, and Lakshmi!)

- Yoga mat... essential so yes, obviously. I also use a second rolled up mat to help raise me a bit for meditation and for some sitting postures. I used a strap on a course once. Never used the block but I like the idea of using it to help with some of the standing postures. This has really given me a lot to think about. Thanks.
