Kindle: The Ultimate Recipe File
As someone who loves to cook, collecting recipes is a favorite past time
My family loves to try out my new creations
I have a 13-year-old son who isn't finicky about anything he eats, well maybe except for brussel sprouts and baked fish. Other than that, he'll eat anything! I have a cabinet full of cookbooks, along with notebooks with torn out recipes from magazines, an index card holder that's about to bust, and recipe books in boxes that I haven't unpacked since moving a year ago. And guess what, I'm still collecting recipes. I think I collect them more than I cook them (ha ha).If you're a lover of cooking, collecting recipes, and recipe books, then you know all too well how cluttered that cabinet that's over the stove or fridge can become. It's no joy to have to reach into an over head cabinet and try to get a cookbook from a large stack that could easily tumble onto your head. Ask me how I know this? It seems that no matter how you organize your cookbooks and arrange them, they get out of order. It's really a pain. My husband complains every time I ask him to get a cookbook for me. He's much taller and won't run the risk of injury like I will. I told him that he should build me a special shelf so that I can have a neat and safe place for all my cookbooks.
Well, I can happily say that my honey can remove that chore from his honey do list. Now before you get too excited in thinking that a man actually did something his wife asked and want to know if you can clone him, he didn't build the shelf. Instead, he bought me an Amazon Kindle Fire. It was a Christmas present. As I opened the box, I was happy, yet surprised. I didn't ask for a Kindle. He told me it was for my recipes. For my recipes? How am I suppose to use this for recipes?
After spending a little time with my awesome Kindle Fire, I found that I can turn all my old recipes into files that I can easily upload to my Kindle. Now, I wouldn't dare try to turn all of my cookbooks into downloadable files, but I can get all my future cookbooks downloaded right to my Kindle. Currently, I've got a total of three new cookbooks on my Kindle and have uploaded half of the recipes from my index card holder. It is a bit time consuming to convert the files, but once you strategize your recipe collection, it's not so bad.

Make all your old recipes Kindle ready!
In order to upload all of your recipes, you'll need to turn your recipes into PDFs. You can do this with free PDF software that can be found on the web or you can purchase it. Adobe is number one in PDF software creation. The Kindle Fire is great as a cookbook and recipe file. I'm able to place the Kindle in my table top stand and prepare meals. The Kindle makes it super easy to view recipes. I don't have to worry about having a bulky cookbook that I have to prop up. I don't have to worry about stains or getting the cookbook wet if it's lying on the counter. I can sort quickly and easily through the menu file to find specific recipes. I don't have to thumb through a large book to find something in the middle or near the end.
What I love the most about using my Kindle as a recipe file is that I can add and remove recipes and cookbooks as I wish. I can have a large assortment of cookbooks that don't take up any space in the kitchen. I simply bring my small, thin device to the kitchen and get to cookin! Oh, and did I mention that your cookbooks can travel? Just imagine, you're visiting relatives for the holidays and you have all of your favorite recipes to share with them. The Kindle makes your cookbooks portable. Where ever you take your Kindle is where your recipes will be. Wow, this is awesome! Ok, gotta get back to converting more recipes to PDF. My Kindle is waiting.

How to turn WORD documents into PDF
Creating digital recipes
DoPDF is a free software program that allows you to turn any word document into a PDF or digital file. These files can be viewed on any computer, smart phone, tablet or ereader. You can use any program you like. The program I use is doPDF. Visit http://www.dopdf.com to download a copy.
Once you've downloaded the program, install it on your computer. To test it out, open a new document and type. Select print from the file menu and view the drop down box to see if doPDF is an option. It will be listed as a printer, but will not print.
Create a Windows WORD Document
If you have Windows, start by opening Word Processor and create a new document. Insert photos of the recipe if you wish. Begin typing your recipe. You can play around with different colors and backgrounds if you'd like.

Once you're done with your recipe. Select file from the menu bar. If you select the print icon, the document will print to your default printer. Once you select print, a box will open asking which printer to use. Select doPDF and then okay.
You'll be asked where you want to save the document. In the location bar, you will need to input the name of the document you're saving. For the illustration, I choose the name of the recipe: Chocolate Brownie Pudding Cake, select okay.
Note: If you've created a cookbook, browse and find it within your document files. If there are sub folders within the cookbook, locate the appropriate folder, input your recipe's name and select okay to produce the pdf.
Your Recipe is now in Digital Format

The software may take a few seconds to create the PDF. It will most likely work in the background. Once finished, the new PDF file will display. Your recipe is now digital and ready to be uploaded to your Kindle or other ereading device.
It's a good idea to create a cookbook as a document file. Save all of your PDF recipes into this file for easier storage, locating, and uploading. Once you're done creating all of your recipes the entire file can be uploaded to your ereader.
It's also a good idea to take photos of the dishes you prepare and include them in your new digital cookbook. Photos add an extra touch to cookbooks and make recipes more enticing.
