An Introduction To The Final Frontier

Star Trek is kind of a big deal (the operative word being "BIG"). For the uninitiated, figuring out where to begin watching can seem to be a rather arduous task. If you know someone who is a Star Trek enthusiast, chances are they have their own ideas about what movie or series you should begin your journey on, but if you're a completest like me, you probably cringe at the sight of an over-zealous Trekkie pulling out Star Trek II when you haven't even seen the first film (to say nothing of the television series) that came before.

In 2009, my girlfriend went to see the J. J. Abrams-directed Star Trek feature film. She liked the film, and wanted more. As the resident Trek fan in her life, the responsibility fell to me to decide where she should begin her journey. Luckily, she is a completest. If you're still reading, I shall assume that you are too. Below, I have prepared a quick question and answer session, a brief run-down of all series/movies, and a how-to guide on how to watch Star Trek from beginning to end. I know it sounds scary, but it really isn't. Trust me!

P.s. I'll be making this as SPOILER FREE as possible!

Trek Terms For Newbies

A Quick List of Universal Star Trek Terminology

Here are some quick shorthand terms that I'll be using on this page. Trust me, still not scary!
  1. Canon: That which is considered to be true within the context of the Star Trek universe.
  2. TOS: Star Trek: The Original Series
  3. TAS: Star Trek: The Animated Series
  4. TNG: Star Trek: The Next Generation
  5. DS9: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  6. VOY: Star Trek: Voyager
  7. ENT: Star Trek: Enterprise
  8. TMP: Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  9. TWOK: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  10. TSFS: Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
  11. TVH: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  12. TFF: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
  13. TUC: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Quick Q & A

Logical Questions Answered Quickly

A quick list of answers to questions that I've gotten from others about Star Trek. Don't see your question answered? Ask your question in the guestbook!
  1. Do I Have To Watch Every Series/Movie To Understand What's Going On?
A: No. Every series is fairly self-contained. While you may miss some inside references and character back stories by not watching everything, you can understand perfectly well what is going on in each individual series.
  2. Are There Any Cross-overs Between Series/Movies?
A: Yes. More on that later...
  3. Do I Have to Read Star Trek Novels or Comic Books?
A: Absolutely not. Books and Novels are referred to as "Extended Universe" materials, and are not considered true canon.
  4. Does Star Wars Have Anything To Do With Star Trek?
    A: No. Nothing at all.
  5. How about Babylon 5, Stargate, Andromeda, Farscape...?
A: None of these have anything to do with Star Trek.
  6. Is The J. J. Abrams 2009 film Star Trek Canon?
A: Yes and no. It takes place in an alternate timeline that was created when Romulans from the 24th century accidentally went back in time. That way, the filmmakers are able to "reboot" Star Trek without erasing the time line of events established in the preceding six series/ten films.

How To Watch Star Trek

The Definitive Guide

How To Watch Star Trek by David C. Roberson

This is the most clear-cut and practical approach to watching everything Star Trek has to offer while getting the most out of the experience. It is not completely in sync with release/air dates, and definitely not in sync with production order, but that particular methodology is ridiculously tedious for the viewer, and I would in no way recommend it.

Note: In reference to the above statement, my one exception to this opinion concerns Star Trek: The Original Series, specifically Episode 02, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." That particular episode, in my opinion, should be viewed before any other episode of TOS as it was the -second- pilot, and standard characters, set designs, and uniforms were not in place. It is therefore considered to have come before the rest of the series. It will be located on the first disc of any Star Trek DVD set you acquire. The rest of the episodes can really be viewed in any order.

Note # 2: I would be remiss not to mention Episode 01 of TOS, "The Cage" which is NOT featured on any Season One set (to my knowledge). It was the first pilot for the series, and some parts are considered non-canon. The parts of the episode which ARE within established continuity are presented in the two-part Season One episode, "The Menagerie." So you won't miss out;-)

Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969)

In The 23rd Century...

Star Trek: The Original Series

Series
Seasons: 3
Episode Count: 79

Star Trek: The Original Series chronicles the adventures had by the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise. This is the series that started it all. Captain James T. Kirk commands the gallant crew in their quest to "seek out new life and new civilizations." At his side is his logical half-Vulcan science officer, Mr. Spock, and the impassioned chief medical officer Dr. "Bones" McCoy.

Crew:
William Shatner - Captain James T. Kirk
Leonard Nimoy - Commander Spock
DeForest Kelley - Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
James Doohan - Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
George Takei - Lt. Hikaru Sulu
Nichelle Nicols - Lt. Nyota Uhura
Walter Koenig - Ensign Pavel Chekov
Grace Lee Whitney - Yeoman Janice Rand
Majel Barrett - Nurse Christine Chapel

Why It's Important
TOS broke a lot of new ground in the '60s. First and foremost, it featured a crew of people of various nationalities and genders who all worked together peacefully. It presented a future where mankind had overcome its own problems and successfully reached for the stars. Most science fiction of the day presented doomsday tales of death and destruction. Also notable is the myriad of stories that dealt with hot button topics not touched by conservative studio censors of the time. It should also be noted that TOS was the first television series to feature an interracial kiss.

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1975)

Boldly Going Again...

Star Trek: The Animated Series

Series
Seasons: 2
Episodes: 22

Star Trek: The Animated Series picks up where TOS left off, with the crew of the Enterprise boldly going where no man has gone before, only now in animated form. The series features the return of characters from the original series like Koloth, and Harry Mudd, as well as a sequel to "The Trouble With Tribbles."

Crew:
William Shatner - Captain James T. Kirk
Leonard Nimoy - Commander Spock
DeForest Kelley - Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
James Doohan - Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
George Takei - Lt. Hikaru Sulu
Nichelle Nicols - Lt. Nyota Uhura
Majel Barrett - Nurse Christine Chapel
James Doohan - Lt. Arex
Majel Barrett - Lt. M'Ress
Nurse Christine Chapel

Why It's Important
TAS is more than a children's cartoon. It's almost completely a continuation of the original series. It retained many of the writers and actors from the original series. While some people claim it is non-canonical, many "canon" elements of the Star Trek Universe were first disclosed on The Animated Series. It should also be noted that it was the first Star Trek series to win an Emmy Award.

At the behest of the Bajoran Provisional Government, the United Federation of Planets has agreed to take joint command of the station in trying times. Sisko is less than enthused about his new assignment, as he and his son are still putting the pieces of their lives back together after the untimely death of his wife. But things begin to get interesting on Deep Space Nine when the leader of the Bajoran people disclose that she believes him to be "The Emissary," a spiritual leader whose coming has been prophesied by The Prophets, non-linear extraterrestrials who reside within a stable worm hole to the unexplored Gamma Quadrant.

As Sisko struggles with his responsibilities as space station commander and the supposed emissary to the Bajoran people, the station becomes a place of intergalactic commerce. Conflict arises often, and danger lurks behind every corner. Not so much danger, however as what lies just beyond the worm hole. I know you were referring to Season One boxsets above, but it's worth mentioning that "The Cage" IS featured on the last disc of the Season 3 boxsets.
Also, as a Trek fan of many years, I recommend the Remastered DVDs for The Original Series, which have 21st century digital effects and look wonderful.
And, for newbies - you can skip "Star Trek V" (invariably voted the Worst Trek Film Ever) and be sure that you're not missing anything important. :-)

I once attended a Star Trek film marathon in San Francisco -- twelve solid hours of Star Trek. It's still fun to watch the original series. Many of the devices Gene Roddenberry portrayed back in the 60s are in use today. He was way ahead of his time. Nice job on the lens. Great posters!
