I grow Orchids and over watering is what most people do that causes the plant to die. See my lens "Orchids of the Americas"

It's truly important to water a plant properly like giving only what a certain plant can take. Just like a cypress bonsai which only need a small amount of water in a scheduled time. Good job on making this informative lens.

Yes! One of the reasons that I don't keep houseplants any more is because I can't seem to get the watering right!

I've done pretty well with house plants with the exception of a bonsai tree I had. Thanks for the tips!

I bought a self watering reservoir from a place in San Diego, called hooksandlattice.com. I use it in my window planters in our secodn story bedrooms (the kids) because it's hard to reach over the beds to water (use fake lowers in the winter {smile}...i';; paste in the picture of the one i bought (if i do it right)

Having a personal relationship with your plants is truly half the battle. People are always telling me how great my African Violets are (I have a lot) and one of the first things they ask is if I water from the bottom (I don't). My AV and I have developed a long term relationship that works for us but may not work for others. I think providing the basics and encouraging plant growers to become in tune with their plants needs is a great suggestion. You've provided lots of tips for growers to build on.

Hi, thanks for that. I am growing a fair number of tomatoes, herbs and other plants. Tips on watering are always welcome, since this seems to be a fairly misunderstood subject. I tried an experiment in self watering plant pots using twine as a wick to draw water up from a reservoir, but it really was not suitable for all plants. It relies heavily on the absorption ability of the soil, and is more slow steady than drench and drain.
