How To Write A Cover Letter That Gets Attention

You Won't Even Be Considered Without A Cover Letter

A good is no longer an option - it's a requirement if you even want to get your foot in the door.

Employers are receiving hundreds of applications every single day - too many to even count sometimes. Before they even start reading the resume, they start eliminating the candidates.

The first to go in the round file are the resumes that don't have a cover letter, and they're quickly followed by those that have a bland, boring, sloppy or otherwise inappropriate cover letter.

For those resumes that make it through that first excruciating cut, there's still one more step. Someone actually reads those cover letters, looking for something that stands out from the crowd.

When there are dozens of people in line for the same job you're after you need to do everything you can to attract the right kind of attention and make yourself stand out. And that means....

You need to learn how to write a cover letter!

How To Write A Cover Letter!

Writing a killer cover letter can be tricky. The most important thing you need to do is find out who to address the letter to. You need the name, professional title and mailing address of the person in charge of making the hiring decision.

Your first inclination might be to address the letter - "To Whom it may Concern". But that's the worst mistake you can make. Because everybody else is going to go the extra mile and find out who the name of the person in authority. And then you're really going to look like a slacker.

Your first paragraph should be 2 or 3 sentences describing the position you're applying for and how you heard about it.

Next, you should write a brief paragraph of 3 or 4 sentences that explains why you feel you're qualified for the position and how you believe you qualifications match up with the skills needed for that particular job.

Your next paragraph should be another 2 or 3 sentences that give a brief description of why you think you're the best person for the job and what you plan to bring to the table.

Of course, that all sounds pretty cut-and-dried, and everybody else will be writing in the same format. So you need to get a little creative and sell yourself with your cover letter.

I help job seekers write cover letters every day. I always include a summary of their work experience and the type of job they want in the cover letter. I try to keep it very short, but make sure all the necessary information is included.
