I Write Online for Money

Ranked #231 in Business & Work, #14,599 overall

I pay my rent writing online

I do pay my rent and most of my bills by writing online.

I have been doing so for about two years with no other source of income, but I started experimenting with the idea about five years ago.

I still live frugally. However the momentum is growing, and a larger income is building with every word I write.

There really is no magic pill or process to writing online or making money from the writing. Just a simple one-foot-in-front-of-the-other mentality and the desire to test and try a variety of ideas.

Article Earning BIG $

I am not sure how this occurs. I certainly did nothing to make it happen. I did not contact the webmasters and ask for a link. However my eHow article about Quickbooks Training & Certification has been picked up by over a dozen websites in the last month.

That means I have a steady stream of visitors viewing that article's page and clicking on advertising while they are there. So far the money I earn is close to $100 a month and climbing!

If I knew how to make this happen with all articles, I would sell you the formula!

Places I Have Written Online

If you are on this page then you are familiar with Squidoo. Build Squidoo lenses and earn money--register free here.

Textbroker pays several times a month and provides a broad range of topics and opportunities to write at all levels. Vsit the registration page here.

eHow is no longer a members site. You must now qualify to write for eHow. If you have some writing skills, this is a good place to hone them and become a better writer while getting paid to do so. Writers are paid per article or they can choose a revenue title and make a percentage of the advertising revenue for the article. Choose a good revenue title and the money every month could add up. Find out more about Demand Media and eHow here.

eCopywriters is similar to Textbrokers. You always get paid to write but you must complete articles at a lower pay before getting to write better paying ones. Visit eCopywriters here.

It's been a while since I wrote for Associated Content. I have written only one article for them and that was five years ago, LOL. I've never received any money from them but I never really tried. However, others appear to be making lots of money writing for them. Associated Content is now part of the Yahoo Network.

Warning About Writing for Content Farms

Always check on the legitimacy of a copywriting company before submitting personal information to them.

Run a search with the business name and the word "scam" and then run a search with the business name and the word "complaint" to see what others have to say.

Sites that do not give much information about the business or little or ridiculaous information about those running the business should be avoided. If they aren't willing to give you a phone number or location address and provide a terms of service agreement or privacy policy...RUN in the opposite direction!

Sure. It's a simple way to make extra money and you don't have to leave home to do it.

I write and do make money, but it isn't for the lazy for sure. I write for Hubpages and a little for Squidoo. You've got to be patient at first and keep working at it. Eventually the money will start coming in. The nice thing though is once you start earning, you'll keep on earning on those same articles every month.

waldenthree.net says:

Gee you write online and earn money. I wish I could do that also in future. I am pretty good at writing but don't know how to make money on line. This is a wonderful lense topic. Also I see you got 100 lense before I did. I just got that today. Hope we meet again soon. Thanks.

No. It lowers every writer's rates and doesn't benefit anyone in the long run.

eHow Revenue Articles

You can see what an eHow revenue article looks like by visiting these links:

Not all revenue articles are successful on eHow but if you do enough of them the total monthly revenue does increase over time. I had a 130+ percent increase in a years time on monthly payout from January to January from $18 a month to $43+ a month. AND the monthly payout grew larger in February...can't wait til next month!

How I Learned to Write

for an online audience.

I have to admit my writing skills were not the greatest when I started writing online.

It wasn't that I couldn't make myself understood, it was just that I didn't completely grasp how to relate to an audience. I also wasn't very good at structuring an article so that the content was easy to digest.

I spent a good year just learning the basics of online writing. I did this by working with editors on eHow and Textbroker. I really listened to their suggestions and critiques of my work and worked very slowly at first. I would agonize over a single article for a week before I released it to an editor. Now I write between two and five articles a day.

Web content and online writing is short and to the point. Once you have that down, adding some personality is easy to accomplish.

I have written a step-by-step explanation of "How to Write a Web Content Article" and I include a sample article here.

Do you write online other than Squidoo?

Do you want to?

  • keepingscore May 18, 2012 @ 8:02 am | delete
I have a blog, here on Squidoo I just rework my best stuff. The format and options Squidoo have make it really enjoyable to use. There are so many sites out there it becomes hard to figure out what one you want to write on. Your lens provide me with a few other ideas, thanks.

I've written for many online clients -- mainly health and education projects. I enjoy research and variety. Your warnings are spot-on. Every time I look for new opportunities, I notice a lot of scams and garbage sites.
