How do I put those Spanish accent marks on?

You are sitting taking you Spanish lessons on your newly purchases course - and tear you hair out over how you write those Spanish accents on the words. Because there is no obvious key for this on the keyboard. In order to write clear and understandable Spanish it is necessary to know how to write Spanish accents correctly.
You almost never see these in English language but makes certainly makes a difference if you are to write proper Spanish.

Change Keyboard layout

...if you want to write a longer Spanish texts

Spanish Keyboard

  1. Go the Start menu > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options

  2. Click on the Add Languages button, choose the Language tab at the top and then click the Details... button.

  3. then click on Add...and add Spanish (one of the many variations)

  4. Press OK to save the new language.

Left of the system tray you can find the language icon where you can change between the languages.
You can also change quickly between languages using the Alt - shift combination.
This will give you the Spanish Keyboard layout.


For example:

  1. Question: "...but where is the key to press before the vowel to put an accent?
    Answer: the key 2 steps to the left of the "L"

  2. Question: "...how to I type the ñ or Ñ key?"
    Answer: the key just right of the "L"

If you are just writing a few Spanish words with accents here and there it is probably easier to use thd socalled "Alt codes".
In order to write such a code, you hold down the ALT key while you type the numbers on the numeric pad at the right side of your keyboard (it will not work typing the numbers on top of the keyboard!)
