The best start when you're thinking on how to write your own song is to have an idea (riff, melody or just a few chords you want to use) that is going to be the song's main theme.

Of course you can start writing your song not having even a single note written, but normally it's better to have something to base the rest of the song on. The main idea is going to be the centre of the song, around which you could develop your musical concept.

Think about what genre you want your song to be in.

As you probably know, the same melody could be played in many different styles, resulting in a completely different feel of the song. There are many things that could affect that. For example, if you want to write a rock ballad, play hard but at slow tempo. If you want a pop song, keep it lighter, fast and use different sounds and instruments.

When planning how to write your own song it is useful to follow some accepted songwriting standards. The rules are not there to limit you. They exist because it is proved that songs built that way work well.
