Brilliant! Learnt something new here... Applying it is gonna take some doing! :)
  • Frog May 9, 2012 @ 4:21 pm | delete
I"m very glad to see you've shared such a wonderful exercise, but saddened that the "creators" of this decided to trademark and market their "new" idea. I could show you hundreds of "zentangles" that I created when I was young, this method of doodling and creating is definitely not new. How sad that they felt the need to make money off of something that is so universal.
  • bloomingrose May 5, 2012 @ 11:11 am | delete
I am blown away by this, especially by the last example that combines zentangle and journalling.
  • Steve_Kaye May 4, 2012 @ 5:35 pm | delete
Yes, this is a marvelous idea. I write in a journal, which I find very comforting. Now I have a new way to expand my mental wanderings. Thank you for publishing this lens.

I've finished 3 zentagles/zendoodles and they all look great. Zendoodles are quick, fun and extremely relaxing when I have an "urge" to doodle. Great lens!

I desperately need a .01 or at least as small as possible white pen. Can you tell me what you are using & where you found it? Thanks in advance.
  • theraggededge Apr 17, 2012 @ 7:23 pm | delete
You and me both! I don't use a white pen, except on that journal page which was done several years ago. I've been looking for a decent one for ages - most are too thick or tend to blob.

I love this! My daughter started doing this on her own when her right hand came out of a cast to teach herself to use her right hand again. She was only five years old. She just drew all kinds of geometric and swirly shapes - look like these. She has many art journals full of these designs now that she is 16 years old.

  • Agape Mar 2, 2012 @ 10:13 am | delete
This may be a silly question, but your last step says to "erase all of the pencil lines." Wasn't the whole thing in pencil? Where does the pen come in?
  • theraggededge Mar 2, 2012 @ 11:31 am | delete
You're right - I omitted to say switch to a pen after drawing the string. You're the first person to notice. I have corrected the instructions now. Thanks!

I didn't know this was called Zentangle, I used to do it a lot - in school when I was bored mainly - zentagles really are a product of setting your mind free, illustrating your subconscious thoughts maybe?. Your zentagles look great.

Thanks for introducing this form of at. I saw something very similar in one school few weeks ago and had no idea it has special name. It is pretty simple but very effective and with A LOT possibilities to explore.

I love Zentangle; and am glad to see that there is a name to describe it! True, many of us used a similar techniqueat one time or another. Mine was with a rapidograph in the late 60's & 70's. I am going to try it agian, this time using Micron pens as recommended.
Many Thanks ~ I appreciate your site!
  • Samantha Dec 14, 2011 @ 9:31 am | delete
Thanks for the info. I used to do drawings like this when I was in high school in the '80s. I would start with a border of something I was looking at, like a cup. Then I would section it off and fill each section with doodles. I was learning Japanese at the time, so I would often draw patterns based on kanji. I haven't made one of these since I was in school. Seeing these reminds me of a time when I used to be creative!!! I now have a 6 year old daughter who is very creative. I think it is time I introduce her to this technique.
  • SimplyTonjia Dec 8, 2011 @ 3:49 pm | delete
    Love this lense.
  • Chris Dec 4, 2011 @ 12:25 am | delete
If you are truly interested in what Zentangle is and where it began please look at the Zentangle website at www.zentangle.com. Anyone who has been trained by its creators understands that it is not a doodle. As a CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher) I recommend you inform yourself before informing others.
  • theraggededge Dec 4, 2011 @ 6:35 am | delete
Chris, I have been following Rick and Maria's progress since before Zentangle.com was even born. I first 'met' them years ago on an unrelated list. Rick and I had some email correspondence connected to the benefits of Zentangle for home-schooling. People were encouraged to download PDFs and share Zentangle freely. I visit the site, I have the kit. I can't be a CZT because I live in the UK.

My Squidoo pages and blogs have sent thousands of people over to Zentangle.com over the last couple of years and have made $s for charity.

However, if I produce a piece of work in the Zentangle manner and wish to call my creation a Zentangle, I will. If I want to call it a doodle, I will. There appears to be a certain element within the CZT community which promotes a holier-than-thou attitude and it does not give a very good impression to the rest of us.

I recommend that you take care of your own art and leave me to my own.
  • Chris Dec 4, 2011 @ 9:24 am | delete
It is true, you may call it anything you wish. CZT training is open to anyone. People from all over the world attended the last training seminar. While you may see my comment as holier-than-thou it is not my intent to present my understanding in that manner. It is merely to share what I have learned through it's creators. Your tangles are an expression of your artistic nature and they are beautiful. I wish you continued enjoyment in whatever avenue you pursue to share it share it with those of us who recognize your talent. Continued success, also, on your charity endeavors.
  • PJ_Deneen Dec 26, 2011 @ 5:24 pm | delete
This is the second instance so far where I've seen "certified" Zentangle teachers act like jerks. It certainly doesn't make me want to go to their website. Like another reader who commented, I did a very similar technique in the 80s. This type of art is hardly new. This was a great lens. More power to you for speaking up.

After reading various comments I realized I missed the 8+ minute video; it's amazing how as a amateur doodler so many of the designs the artist used could be remembered on one or another doodle from my past. Just never placed altogether, beautiful!
  • WaynesWorld Oct 14, 2011 @ 10:57 pm | delete
I sure would like to think I could be so beautifully creative, I was looking at your examples and thinking two thoughts: 1. Some modern day grafitti artists seem to do Zentangles just on a larger scale. 2. I am a distributor for sendoutcards.com/81269 and these would make such beautiful cards
Great lens, I'll be back when I have more time to explore your links.

I was surprised when first saw "zentangle" drawing. It reminded me the ink drawings by Nadia Russ - www.nadiaruss.com. When I saw a book by Design Originals and in it: "The line can curve, wiggle, zig and zag into any shape you want... Fill each section with a different tangle...". I knew, this is what Nadia Russ created in 1989! But I was totally shocked when saw: "Zentangle was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas..."
What's zentangle? Zentangle is for some reason renamed and simplified form of "NeoPopRealism" ink drawing, first created by Nadia Russ 22 years ago and in 2003 announced as NeoPopRealism. This story is truly "zig-zag".
  • theraggededge Jun 29, 2011 @ 3:23 am | delete
Well, yes. This form of pen and ink drawing has been around a long time. However, the Zentangle 'method' is a prescribed, rigid format - 3.5" tile. 4 dots and a string. The beauty of it being that it is easy to teach to people with little or no artistic experience.

Most of the other drawings on this page would be more correctly called 'Zentangle-inspired' or NeoPop Realism-inspired maybe? Rick and Maria have not trademarked the drawing method but only the name 'Zentangle', and their personally-delivered method of teaching it as an active meditation.

Very interesting lens, I have done a little zentangling but have not yet got to the stage where I incorporate them into my art, etc. they are still something that "stands alone". After reading this I am beginning to wonder if I should be taking active steps to do something about that.

The most comprehensive guide to zentangles I've seen yet. Thanks so much for this mother lode of info.
  • MSchindel Sep 28, 2010 @ 12:48 pm | delete
I tried making my first Zentangle this past weekend, and I was amazed by how different the "doodling" patterns I ended up making were from my usual style of drawing. It really got my creative juices flowing in other areas of my art! Thanks so much for putting together this excellent blog.
  • DinosaurEgg Sep 20, 2010 @ 2:21 pm | delete
These are beautiful! Reminds me of Escher but much less formal. Very cool. I struggle with a lot of 'art' but I can definitely appreciate these.
  • elizajane202 Sep 17, 2010 @ 4:23 am | delete
These are beautiful. I love the small ones you have up here, they'd make for some interesting pillows.
  • susankristoff Sep 14, 2010 @ 4:31 pm | delete
This is just fabulous! I've seen some basic zentangles but these are amazing. And I totally agree that Sakura Micron pens are the best, I love them for journaling.
  • Squidster Sep 8, 2010 @ 1:52 pm | delete
Somehow I had associated the term 'zentangle' with some kind of puzzle. But, wow, this is so much cooler. I've been quite a doodlebug myself and this looks definitely like something worth exploring further. Love it!
  • seegreen Sep 8, 2010 @ 6:02 am | delete
I have been making Zentangles since the first time I saw this page. Thank you for introducing me to this art form. Blessed by an Angel.

  • Momsbusy247 Aug 13, 2010 @ 11:21 am | delete
I can't draw a stick figure but I think I can do this... it looks like a lot of fun!
  • prosperity66 Aug 6, 2010 @ 12:47 pm | delete
OMG! I discover a brand new world! Actually I thought YOU invented Zentangling! I didn't know such art would exist before you published your first zentangle page. I'm wowed!
  • theraggededge Aug 12, 2010 @ 10:35 am | delete
Nooo.. I wish I had - 'Zentangle' was invented and registered by MT & RR as it says in the intro, though, of course, people have doodled for yonks.
  • LotusMalas Aug 6, 2010 @ 7:22 am | delete
What a fabulous art method to help someone get in touch with his or her intuitive side!
  • JaguarJulie Aug 2, 2010 @ 2:59 pm | delete
You know something my dear? I was just thinking how beautiful it would have been to have a Zentangle in the traveling squid journal. Hmmm ... maybe we can work something out that would allow me to add that once the international edition arrives home? Good to see you today. And, such a marvelous page this is.
  • maria Jul 28, 2010 @ 11:56 am | delete
Great job Love this kind of art !
  • girlfriendfactory Jul 25, 2010 @ 3:22 am | delete
OMG, Bev!!! These are awesome! Now, this is coming from someone who can barely draw a stick figure, but geez, I'm tempted to give these a try. I was never much of a doodler (too busy taking notes most of the time), but when I tried, they were always goofy flowers and scribbles, nothing interesting. But, I'm willing to try anything twice. Your squid is all out fabulous!!! Bravo!

  • Deborah J. Weaver Jul 16, 2010 @ 11:25 am | delete
How can there be a "proper" way to do this type of art? I've been making images like these for years. Clever entrepreneurial concept! Make art, make money, and make others happy! (Not critical just admiring what you have built! Any artist who finds a way to make a living doing art is A-OK in my book!)
  • theraggededge Jul 21, 2010 @ 10:37 am | delete

  • Got to be something better Jun 8, 2010 @ 10:09 am | delete
Society is definitely on a down turn when doodles are able to be copyrighted. Why would you even want to do that?
  • theraggededge Jun 8, 2010 @ 11:53 am | delete
My own art on this page is copyright of course, as is anyone's original work. Why wouldn't I want it protected if I put time and effort into it?

The word 'Zentangle' is a registered trademark. Not mine.
  • the777group Jun 30, 2010 @ 2:37 am | delete
I'm with you, entirely. That's fantastic work.
  • girlfriendfactory Jul 25, 2010 @ 3:48 am | delete
I don't understand people who are confused about why art is copyrighted. I have to wonder about their integrity or their level of knowledge and understanding about art and what it takes to create it. BTW, the Ecstasy of Energy hands you did are phenomenal!!! I can't wait to be awake enough to try one of these!!!
  • artbymichelle Jun 5, 2010 @ 2:08 pm | delete
    LOVE your work!
  • lavenderlass Jun 2, 2010 @ 2:42 pm | delete
When I took a class on teaching art in the elementary classroom, it was called "line and design" and was something that even the most unartistic could manage and end up with masterpieces. I love the name zendoodle. Like others, I've been doing this since early in my school years ages ago. Now I can add this to my rubber stamping.

  • Paula Apr 23, 2010 @ 12:04 am | delete
I must be waaaay older than all of you! Since I was young, many years ago, I have been doing elaborate doodles with pen, pencil and colored pencil. I have old school note books, work meeting minutes and other meetings notes who's margines are festooned with what you call Zentangles. Meetings seem to be the place I need them most!
Who would have thought that there would be a marketable idea in a doodle! I suppose that you all are from the computer age and did not grow up with a pencil in you hand LOL
  • helen Apr 26, 2010 @ 8:44 pm | delete
Hi i know where r coming from, if u r in ure fifty's then i too used to doodle, it has been given a updated name, but do u still doodle to release thoughts so ure mind isn't cluttered, that's what i get from it, and i am more calm to handle day to day life

  • Nicky2Time Mar 30, 2010 @ 4:04 pm | delete
What the heck is a Zentagle? Never seen the word before so I had to check it out. Very cool designs. My business frame of mind immediately went to creating T-shirts and throw pillows from these designs ( I though I was looking at throw pillows when I saw the first images on this lens). Heck, create your own zentagle, go to zazzle and show off your new zentagle on your t-shirt. You could start a group. Is there already a zentagle group?
    Good stuff!
  • theraggededge Mar 30, 2010 @ 4:17 pm | delete

Very interesting, didn't know they had a name. I've done similar doodles for years. It started several years ago when I worked at the domestic violence shelter. Part of the job was taking hot line calls, oftentimes these women just wanted to talk, and would do so for quite a long while. So, I'd doodle on a piece of scratch paper while I listened. I'd throw them away afterward. Until some of the kids in shelter spotted them. From then on, they'd all fight over who got to keep them. My niece and I even now, once in awhile sit down and make these kinds of drawings. They're fun! (I'm not an artist at all..can't draw a straight line with a ruler, but these come out pretty nice!)

I've never heard of this, but it looks interesting. Congratulations on LOTD!

I've been doing this type of doodling since high school. I would draw a shape and fill it in with patterns -- usually during lectures -- bored -- Anyhow, <3 this and tried doing it as you instructed and I believe I have found a new hobbie. Great lens.
  • Greekgeek Jan 9, 2010 @ 12:42 pm | delete
Writer/scholar J.R.R. Tolkien did this a lot! His notebooks, postcards and letters to friends often have odd carpet-like doodles tucked around the margins, surrounding the stamps on envelopes, etc.

This is an update to my earlier comment. :-) I showed this page to my 11 year old son and afterward, he happily spend a couple of hours drawing zentangles. I only had basic printing paper and a Sharpie marker so I plan to go out and pick up some heavier paper and some of the Micron markers to put in his Christmas stocking. He loves to draw and this gives him another outlet for that creative energy.
  • theraggededge Dec 4, 2009 @ 12:23 pm | delete
Wow! I wish I could get mine drawing for a couple of hours! Tell your son I would love to see some of his one day soon.

LOVE this! Never even heard of the word zentangle, but ya know I'm an obsessed doodler and think I'm a natural at this. Halfway through your page I was grabbing paper and pen to try some of the designs. I doodle when I'm bored, had the most gorgeous notes in college with crazy designs everywhere and then notes all around and inside of 'em! Some of my best doodles are when I'm not trying really, like I'm on the phone and start doodling while I'm talking and then hang up and think WOW! that's a GOOD one!!! Smiles! 5*s and A+ and lensrolling to some of my artsy pages. Best 2U!

I find your art journal pages very inspiring - what a great idea! I was also unaware of what a Zentangle or Zen Doodle referred to until I ran into your lens and I find it fascinating how many people seem to doodle this way. Favorited, and lensrolling to my Oriental Tribal artwork because it's the closest thing I can relate to. ;-)

So, THAT's what a Zentagle is! How neat! My husband is going to love this. And now I have the term for a lot of the artwork he creates, because it's at least similar to this, especially the doodles he makes in his sketchbook. He'll listen to "space music" and draw designs. Me, I'm usually too busy typing to doodle anymore, but "back in the day" I used to do zen-like doodles all over my notebook covers in school. Anyhow, great lens and congrats on top 100!
