How Do I Tile
Asking yourself, how do I tile? Many homeowners assume they can tile, without little or no preparation. If you want a quality result, it is essential to it right. A quality finish means a little thought, preparation and planning. While tiling may seem so easy to "do it yourself" types, people make do,and skip important steps sometimes getting poor results for their efforts.
Common mistakes
- Preparation and surface right.
It is important to clean and prepare a smooth surface from which to start and work on. Please don't skip this step,as it can lead to an uneven and unstable tiling, with bumps and lumps. Any foreign coatings , wallpaper or adhesive type martial, should always be removed prior to tiling.
- The wrong adhesive or tiling cement.
This is important. Humid areas like bathrooms, swimming pools or the shower area it plays a vital role. Waterproof adhesive is a must or special tile cement paste. Even when they are laid correctly, well-fitted tiles can let some water through to the adhesive. This will eventually led to it crumbling and break with non-waterproof adhesives.
- Grouting, take your time with this.
Taking your time, spread the grout evenly and slowly. Use a support tool like a squeegee to help if you need it. If you try to be too quick and grout a large area, the grout on far-off spots may dry out before you actually get to it. Spreading grout too hastily is also likely to lead to an uneven tiling. Remove the excess grout immediately, it will be much harder to do this once it has dried.
- Excess.
One of the most common signs of an amateur tiling, is not removing the excess grout. This is an easy fix, just clean it off.
- Wrong number of tiles.
The first-time tilers, will just buy the exact the number of to tiles. You should get at least 5%-10% more than the minimum you actually need,to insure yourself against such things as breakage's, miscalculations and difficulties or cutting to size. This also gives you some spare tiles to replace odd cracked ones in future, should you need them.
- Bath tops, getting the seal right.
If the gap between the bath top and the tiles is not sealed correctly, you will end up with water seepage down the wall side. One way to avoid this is by filling the bath tub before using the sealant. Bath tubs can move about quite a bit when filled with water, which can then put a strain on the sealant. This could led to the sealant cracking.
- A plan.
This is common, yet an important mistake which people make. You should plan out what you are going to do. For example, measure out the surface you are going to tile carefully. Another is the use of curves, which is significantly more difficult, than tiling a flat area. You should also plan for at least 10 or 15% wastage or a supply of spares for future replacements. If your are planning on cutting your own tiles, the cutting process can be frustrating and expensive, so the fewer cuts the better. Just try and keep it as simple as you can, until you get a little experience under your belt.Or see how craftsmen do it.

Some more additional points on How Do I Tile.
Dotting corners, that is adding adhesive spots to each corner. It actually increases the chance of cracking, because the adhesive shrinks as it dries so creating a tension across the tile. by Adding dots of adhesive to the corners, some people believe that they will achieve a stronger bond. What actually happens is adhesive which is thicker in some areas, will tend to shrink and add pressure on the tile which may latter crack.
Not using battens or some form of guide to help you.
The battens are thin rods of wood, used to give a straight line from which to start, both in horizontal and vertical directions to help laying in straight lines. Trying to lay the tiles without such a support, will often result in positioning mistakes and a generally give a poor look to the finished surface.
Mistakes,get them sorted out.
Normally, you will get a few problem areas as you go along. Get a fresh pair of eyes to look over you work, within 6-12 hours as they may spot any mistakes you have made. The adhesive or cement will hardened quickly and you may have to start over if you don't sort it out.
