How To Choose A Niche

Choosing a niche to promote as an affiliate or even for your new web business probably causes more consternation than almost any other element of getting started online.

It can sometimes prove to be a real barrier to entry for some people and many quite often give up at the very first hurdle, simply because they cannot think of a suitable or profitable niche.

So what is a niche?

Wikipedia describes it as "a focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector."

In other words, it's kind of like a market within a market.

In terms of Internet Marketing there are 3 main areas or categories that you should focus your efforts on. These markets have proven to be extremely profitable time and time again.

They are as follows...

Health

Wealth

Lifestyle & Love

Of course these are way too generic for our purposes and we need to dig down much deeper within each of these markets in order to find a profitable niche.

How exactly do you do this?

Well the first thing I would suggest is that you think about the things you like to do.
Ask yourself the following questions?

What are my hobbies & interests?

What do I like to do in my spare time?

What pastimes & recreational activities do I enjoy?

What are my areas of expertise or specialist knowledge?

Can I provide a solution to a problem?

Don't be too generic - 'FISHING' for instance is not a niche.

However 'BOBBING FOR EELS' is a niche (OK sure it might not be a particularly profitable one but hopefully you get the point!)

Here is a FANTASTIC way to get some ideas for niches...

Is there something you'd LIKE to START doing in an ideal world?

For instance, perhaps you are interested in collecting volcanic ash from recently erupted volcanoes (sorry - a bit random I know!)

If you think about it...you ARE your target market.

You will be researching and collecting information on this topic and there's a good chance that if it interests you, there will be others out there who are also interested and willing to perhaps pay for the information.

If you can collect and collate information scattered all over the Internet and really research your project then you instantly have a product, either to give away (to build a list) or to sell.

Another way to get ideas is to BRAINSTORM - get a piece of paper and start writing...do not stop for 5-10 minutes and don't be too critical or analyse your writing until the time is up. Only after 5 or 10 minutes should you look through your writing and make changes and edits. It's a great way to get your creative juices flowing and you should come out with a flood of ideas.

A further way to generate ideas is to type questions into the search bars of sites like YouTube for instance to see what kind of information people are looking for. Go to YouTube and type in questions like "How to", "How do I", "How can I", "What should I do" etc. and take a look at the results. It should help to spark your imagination!

If you really want to make money online and work from home, you are going to have to find a niche for yourself so GET CREATIVE!

Listen to conversations, observe and notice what people are doing & thinking. Find out what they're interested in. What are the current fads & crazes etc.
