How to Download Music to your PSP

Welcome to the How to download music to PSP Lens. Besides playing games, your Sony PlayStation Portable can let you listen to music and watch movies.
Your PSP may only play songs that are in MP3 file format, so that is the first step you need to take. Download the MP3 songs you want off the Internet or rip them from your CDs.
If you haven't one already in your computer, get a CD Ripper program to extract the digital music files from your CD. Place the CD in the correct computer drive and your CD Ripper program should start up automatically. Rip the CD tracks you want and then copy the MP3 music files into a separate folder, called 'PSP Music' or something like that. Remember what drive that folder is saved in (e.g. D: or E: drive, etc.). If you need to convert the music files to MP3, use a converter program like Sony's Image Converter, etc. If you have the latest PSP, some other file formats may be used directly without being converted to MP3.
Now you need to copy these music files to your PSP. Plug a USB 2.0 cable into both the PSP and your computer. Switch on the PSP and press the 'Home' button. Go to 'Settings' and then the 'USB Connection', pressing the X button to display the USB Connection. Once the USB Connection has been activated, the computer will also detect the new USB device.
On your computer, select the correct drive and then open the PSP file system. Create a new folder and name it. From your computer, copy all the saved MP3 files into the new PSP folder. Once all the music files have been copied, press the O button on the PSP and disconnect the USB cable.

You may have heard of a PSP Download membership site, called PSP Blender, which is hugely popular with the PSP community. I have read some criticisms of this site and it is these concerns that a few people have which I am addressing in this article. The main complaint that some have is that PSP Blender is just a site that redirects you to bit-torrent, or Peer-to-peer (P2P), networks which, as you probably are aware, are free. To be quite honest, if you have the time and know where to look online, you can find downloads for your PSP on P2P sites and then download them at no cost. One area you need to careful with, though, is that many P2P sites have pirated media files and downloading these is illegal. The best way to get game downloads for your PSP, for example, is to get a homebrewed game that has been written and distributed for public use and has no copyright protection on it. Sadly, Sony has not encouraged the development of homebrew games because of its own commercial interests and so there is no official channel for game developers to promote their legally-distributed homebrew games.
Because of this, there are plenty of dodgy programmers writing games with bad, or dangerous, code written in the game. So getting downloads for your PSP from unofficial P2P sites, and elsewhere, can really be a minefield for obtaining damaging software and viruses. I hear all the time of people downloading malicious files and then finding their PSP becomes "bricked" (broken). Personally, I don't mind paying the small cost of a PSP Blender membership as I know that they carefully choose the P2P networks they link to, and even provide the software for downloading files in the membership price.
