Why bears?

I love bears, I always have.  I have bears from 2.5cm (1") through to a couple of feet high, yet until recently I had only ever made one bear and that was years ago and a complete disaster.  This lens is set up to show all bear enthusiasts that they can make their own special bear.

A chance encounter. How I discovered bear making.

Nearly a month in New Zealand and I hadn't seen one decent NZ made bear. I cleaned out the motor caravan hoping the rain would break. It was a fair way to the centre. Short on time, I decided leave it and order the bear from home. I left NZ with only a small tourist bear.

Unexpectedly, I returned to NZ 11 months later. Determined that this time I would get my bear, I booked an over night stay in Christchurch especially.

The evening sun warmed me as I rushed to where the two bear shops were one was open. Entering the small door, my heart jumped. The small room was stuffed full of -bears! No! Mostly dolls and other stuffed toys with a small shelf of quality bears. I rushed to buy one before they closed and left the shop disappointed. The experience just wasn't right.

The next morning I returned to the other shop. I couldn't believe my eyes - no bears!
I was leaving when the owner directed me upstairs.

His wife made the bears on site!

I spent the next hour chatting to her about bears, making bears and bear materials.
She showed me a half finished bear. As he was homeless, I adopted him, named him and had his outfit designed with a Kiwi bird.

I left the shop elated, determined that when I returned home I would learn to make my own bears.

Mini Bear Tryouts - making teddy bear for the first time

With this amazing book I managed to create my first miniture bear with relative ease. It is clear, well layed out and easy to follow. The writer is an expert who helps your presiou7s first bear come to life in your hands. She helps overcome the enevitable hicups of a new project by showing you shortcuts and simple methods that save you time and cost that would otherwise only years of experience.

My first bear was called Ben, and hes really cute! Considering my only experience before was a bear at school years ago and one as a teenager. Neither of which were mini bears I was really pleased with the results.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that mini bears are faster to make because they are smaller, its just not so. Mini bears take more effort because they are smaller - and you have to sew them by hand! Yipes, my sewing is crap so I was worried about this, but the amazing invention of invisible thread helped my tentative efforts.

Ben is perfect - no really he is! Well to my eyes he is. One moment he was all parts and then a little face emerged then a small bear staring at me. Of course the bear experts would note that he was made by a beginner because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get his eyes to sink in; a real give away to those in the know. But I kind of like his eyes sticking out it makes him endearing.

The next bear I made was even smaller.
