How To Potty Train A Dog

Potty training a dog requires repetition and affirmation. A dog would need a spoken command from the master in order for it to accomplish a deed. Spoken commands such as "sit," "heel," and "stay are basic obedience commands which the dog can master.

A spoken command for the dog to poop or pee is necessary for it to associate such command with a corresponding action. Simple spoken commands such as "poop here" will work if done repeatedly.  Scheduling your dog's meals and water intake will also create a routine. A routine also allows you to approximate the time of the dog's excretory functions.

Taking the dog to the same spot every time it needs to go develops a sense of routine. The dog will recognize the smell of that spot and will know that spot is for it to pee or poop. If your dog pees or poops at a different place, your rug for example, make sure to disinfect and clean that place thoroughly to remove the scent. A strong disinfectant is needed because a dog's is more sensitive than human's sense of smell.

Try to observe your dog for visible signs. A dog usually shows displays of discomfort and restlessness before peeing or taking a poop. Try to observe and take the dog outside as soon as it exhibits any of these signs. This might be a hit and miss method for the dog might be restless even if not about to pee but being keen and observant will allow you to see little hints. A door equipped with a dog exit or dog door also allows the dog entry and exit independent from the owner. This will allow the dog to go out of the house when it feels the urge.

Another method of potty training is through crate training. A crate, unlike a cage, is a special living area for a pet dog. This living area must be equipped for the dog's comfort. This simulates a den like atmosphere similar to where wild dogs live. By nature, a dog will not soil its own living area.

Another important element in training a dog is praise. Praising a dog in a happy and uplifting tone helps affirm that the dog performed the deed correctly. If the dog hears your affectionate praise it will continue doing the deed right the next time. And the best thing in training a dog is that the dog always wants to please its owner.
