How to Save Gas and How to Save Money on Gas
Driving is an essential part of life and saving money on fuel costs during an energy crisis is not an easy task. The gas saving methods posted on the Internet are seemingly becoming more vast as the fuel prices increase. Everyone seems to have an idea of what methods will save gas, however it is the tried and true methods which are proving to save gas more than the new breakthrough methods people are discovering.
A manual transmission will save more gas by being more fuel efficient than an automatic transmission. The manual transmission will allow the driver to shift earlier than an automatic, which will keep the RPM low which saves gas. An automatic transmission does not have this luxury of controlling the timing of the shifting. Power is lost to heat through the torque converter and centrifugal clutch to drive the car which means the automatic transmission must also have a cooling mechanism. It is highly impractical for you to change out the transmission in your car, but if you have an automatic there are limited methods to saving gas. Gradual acceleration to desired cruising speed as well as shifting into neutral on both styles of transmissions while coming to a stop will keep the engine at an idle speed.
There are trade-offs to saving gas by shifting early or shifting into neutral when coming to a stop. When shifting early in a manual transmission, the RPM are low is saving gas, but this can put stress on the throw-out bearing in the clutch assembly. To avoid this problem, shift early but not too early to put a strain on any engine component. The same goes for putting the transmission in neutral when stopping. While saving gas, this puts more strain on the braking system such as the pads and rotors of the car. When worn, these components will need to be replaced, which can be costly repairs. The trick is to find a happy medium between using all components of the vehicle to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle without being overly damaging.
The tire and wheel size are a large determinant of fuel mileage. You will save more gas if you have a smaller wheel and tire. People can go one step further and find out if an aftermarket rim is lighter than the stock rim on the car. Many times steel rims are used on cars which weighs more than aluminum. The aftermarket rims weighing less is not true every time, so be sure to check or the hope for gas savings will all be for not.
The tire chosen to be run on the car will also determine the gas savings and fuel mileage realized. A larger tire will have a higher rolling resistance, which means more gasoline will be needed to move the car or truck. You can save gas by buying a smaller tire with less rolling resistance or even purchasing a low rolling resistance tire.
Low rolling resistance tires are designed for fuel economy. Many hybrid vehicles come equipped with low rolling resistance tires straight from the factory. The gas savings from the tires and other components inside the vehicle add up to drastic gasoline cost savings. In a conventional car, the combination of being a savvy consumer and conscientious driver are the best tool in saving gas and money during the daily commute.
