How to softmod Wii - Myth or Fact?

If you have not updated your system from 2.2 Firmware then you are fine you just need an action replay to play homebrew / GC backups but no wii backups. Otherwise you will need a mod chip. - read on we have tested out the best one to get.

The Tutorial

Plug your SD card into your computer, now using the link above get a hold of SDLoad, firstly you have to format the SD card to either FAT or FAT16, if you can't do this return your computer to the store from which you bought it . After formatting it run sdpatch.exe through the command line as follows:

sdpatch.exe (drive letter):\

now copy SDLOADER.BIN to the root of the card, at this point you can load it up with emulators and what not as long as they are in .dol format . They can be in any directory as long as SDLOADER.BIN is in the root.

After installing the above insert SD card into SD card reader and plug into memory card slot A. Insert your action replay card into B and the disc into that place where discs go.

When AR boots up pick the USA flag and then ADD NEW GAME. SDLOAD is the game name and push done. Then enter (m) as the code name. Enter the following code

Then select ADD NEW CODE and name it SDLOAD. Enter the following code

Select the code named SDLOAd and check the box next to it, press start and Open and close the lid of disc drive when prompted. Then SDLOAD starts up and you can take it from there!

Identify the DVD chip using the Wii's serial number

Forget about the purchase date or the checksum digit in the box.

It seems the first part of the serial number holds the key to knowing if you have the incompatible D2B chip or not - NOTE Cyclowiz supports D2B Chipset (Aug 16th/07).

If your serial is below LEH 1088XXXX there is a 98% chance you don't have the D2B chip.

I your serial is between LEH 1088XXXX and LEH 1097XXXX the chance you have the D2B chip is about 50%.

If your serial is above LEH 1097XXXX there is a 98% chance you have the D2B chip.

For North-America it appears that there are three different ranges in use (LU1/LU3/LU5).

Its possible that each range is used in a different area, factory or language pack.

Each range will have a number where the D2B chip is introduced.

For LU1 this seems to be around LU 104XXXXXX and LU 105XXXXXX.

For LU3 its between LU30667XXXX and LU3070XXXXX and

for LU5 its somewhere between LU 5077XXXXX and LU50853XXXX.

Australia

Keep in mind that it is possible that there are different factories or production lines that use different stocks.

Therefore the above tables could be wrong at some points.

It is also possible that a console's DVD initially failed the Quality Checks and has been shipped with a new DVD

player that has the D2B chip. Thiswould only apply to serials that are in the danger zone.

However, so far the serial number seems to give a reasonable indication of what chip is inside your console.

Is there really a mod chip, what is a mod chip?

Wii mods. Modification chip or modchip is a device used to play import discs, backup dvd-r/ dvd-rw, or homebrew game roms & emulators and also to circumvent the digital rights management of many game consoles, including the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Wii. Almost all modern console gaming systems have hardware-based schemes which ensure that only officially sanctioned games (whose producers pay licensing fees) may be used with the system and implement country and regional lockout similar to the scheme used in DVD movies. The specific technical nature of these DRM systems varies by system, and may include cryptographic signing (Xbox), intentionally unreadable sectors (PlayStation), custom optical media (Nintendo Wii, Dreamcast), or some combination thereof. Modchips are available also for some DVD players and PSP PlayStation Portable, to defeat region code enforcement and user operation prohibitions. Which is the best Wii modchip to use with 3.0e Firmware?

Currently the best mod chip to use is the CycloWiz Mod Chip.

How to Dismantle Wii Console

Take your Wii Apart Safely with Wii Dismantle Video.

Of course you have to open your Wii. There are a lot of great tutorials around, it's very easy as long as you have the proper material, a philips screwdriver and and a tri-wing screwdriver. The tri-wing screwdriver must be inserted deeply, so not every tri-wing bit might work. Video is included for general purposes, you do not have to completely disassemble your Wii.

Installation In Progress!

Installation was as easy as it could be. We used a regular small-tip soldering iron. It took us exactly two minutes to perform the entire operation. Very easy take your time and it will work out. If not then use a soldier remover and start over its fool proof.

Thanks to the well designed quick-solder pads the solder goes automatically where it has to, without creating any short. The mod was the covered with tape, as specified by the install procedure. An LED lets you check if there is an installation problem, but everything was fine for us.

Thanks to the very thin mod printed circuit board, there was no problem putting the drive back at its place and reassembling the Wii.
