How to tile shower
Not only does learning How to Tile Shower, add beauty to your home, but it also increases durability and value. Follow these steps to do it yourself. So here we go.
1. Gut.
Gut the shower stall right down to the studs. To do this you may need to remove the pan and ceiling, as well.
2. Cement board.
Next put up a sturdy cement board backer. The cement board, is just like putting up drywall. Cut it to fit, and then screw it to the studs. Then leave a 1/8" gap between panels. Next use a hole saw, to cut the holes where the head and the handles will come through. Get the cement board flush with the lip of your pan by using shims behind the board to get the desired thickness. When doing this, use 100% silicone caulk bathroom sealant, to seal the seams between the panels.
3. Measure.
Next, measure up from the bottom of the backer board the height of a tile minus 1/2". This will give you a 1/2" overlap over the lip on your pan. Then mark this with a sharpie and using a level, transfer the mark across the stall. This will act as a guide for the top of the first row so that all the tiles will be level.
4. Mix.
Now mix enough thinset for the bottom row.
5. Brittle set.
To avoid a brittle set, dampen the cement board with a sponge. Not doing this, will allow the cement board to draw moisture out of the thinset too quickly, making for a set that is susceptible to cracking.
6. Starting by Laying the First Row.
Start by troweling on some thinset and spread it using a notched trowel. Now set the tile into it by twisting slightly while pushing into the thinset. Remove it to make sure you have good coverage on the back. Reinstall it,then keep setting tiles using spacers in between. Stop after finishing the first row. Let them set for 24 hours.
7. Repeat the procedure.
Repeat, setting each row on top of the last row. Then continue until you reach the top of the shower stall. Measure up from top of the last row, mark a line with a level as guide for next row. Spread the thinset between last row and the marked line with v-notched trowel. Set them into thinset using spacers all around. Repeat for next row up and so on.
8. Wait.
Let it all set for 48 hours
9. Floating the Grout into Spaces.
Mix up a batch of grout, using a sponge float, smooth it into the joints. Please check the directions on the bag of grout. It's usually 30-40 minutes or so, you want to wipe the excess grout with a damp sponge in a circular motion. Keep wiping with a clean sponge until the surface is clear.
10. Cure.
Before sealing, let the grout cure for 24-48.
11. Done!
That's it,you now know the basics of how to tile shower.
