Learn How To Write Lyrics

If you really want to learn How To Write Lyrics then this is the place you will learn to free yourself from the everyday confines that restrict you from letting go and writing good lyrics. The truth be known, anyone can learn how to write lyrics however, it does take some real discipline and dedication. Writing lyrics is one thing but ultimately you want to be a songwriter.

I actually started out as a singer. Throughout my school life I sang in choirs and bands. Shortly after I left school to travel this big or small world of ours, (depending on your travel experience)
I found that I really missed music. You see when you travel of the beaten track for so many years without the modernisms to keep you in the loop you really miss the simple things in life. Like music. What was left for me to do?

MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

I started writing songs and learned how to write lyrics. How you might ask. Well I don't know to many lyricists that write without playing an instrument. Ahh, you might say to yourself. I don't play an instrument! But you do! I bet you either hum the melody to yourself or you belt out some brilliant tune in the shower or driving in your car. singing is a form of expression and when you sing, good or badly, it resonates with the music of the spheres that surrounds us. This is the place where all creative music matter is stored and somehow, re-arranges itself in order to deliver to us our inspiration.

Before I started playing guitar at the late age of 24 I would write lyrics by first humming a melody to myself. Some writers write lyrics first and others start with a melody or tune. I find it difficult to write lyrics without having some form of melody in my head hence the fact that been able to sing or play another instrument like guitar is a great advantage.

I DON'T WRITE MUSIC, MUSIC WRITES THROUGH ME

I think like any creative process much like learning How To Write Lyrics one truly has to 'leave' oneself and let things flow. I try not to think to much about what I'm writing but rather to let it come through me from the music of the spheres. I often used to say in my early writing days, "I don't play music, music plays me" or "I don't write music, music writes through me". We tend to over analyze everything as humans. Free up that space and let the music of the spheres write through you. If there is only one thing you take from this page then let it be this. Read it again and truly let it sink deep into your being. It will be the difference of the making of a good lyricist and a bad one.

Song Writing Tips

Writing Song Lyrics - Lesson 1

A good way to start or if you have writers block is to pick up a blank sheet of paper and start writing furiously non stop. Don't think about what you are writing. Try and write at least one page and if you feel like continuing then carry on until you stop.

It might look something like this.

"When you go to the beach you find yourself eating an apple and through the window you find a door handle with a dog hanging on it. I love to see the breeze flowing through the trees but yet i don't realize the the food is still on the stove. Black, white, orange feet crazily firing on all cylinders next to the back door I feel it doesn't really work for me because if she just listens then the rain would stop."

Yes, it's gibberish but it is free expression without boundaries. This process truly frees up the rigidity that keeps us "grounded" for lack of a better word. As writers we don't want to be grounded because we don't leave room for free expression. That's what we are doing when writing lyrics. Expressing. You might find some useful lyrics on that gibberish page. Work with it.

Song Writing Tips

Pick up a melody in the white noise that surrounds you. The wind, traffic or a crackling fire place. Replace the sounds with a melody. Don't over analyze just go with the flow.

I have a lyrics scrapbook that I write in. Keep it handy at all times if possible. If a line comes to your head then write it down. Don't worry if you can't finish it now or if you come unstuck. You can pick up on it at a later stage. I've sometimes joined several little verses, choruses and lines to form one song. I've even changed completed melody's for some of the lyrics I've written before. Be FLEXIBLE. Forget conforming to what everyone else is writing and saying. You need to FEEL. If you start asking how you FEEL about these lyrics or line you've written instead of asking yourself what you THINK then you begin to know how it might make the listener feel. After all the song should invoke a feeling.

These are just some basic methods that you can use to tap into your creativity but I think it's important to really grasp and learn all aspects of songwriting. I found a very cool and comprehensive program to assist me and take me to the next level. It WILL do the same for you so check it out now.
