I've been told that the songs I write are good, and sometimes even "DEEP". But this has been said by close friends and some family. Doesn't mean that I give up. I keep writing, see where I end up.
Lyrics to add to your song:
Telling us about wrongs and rights
    Or the selfish, sleepless nights.

personally I'm a "simile" guy but that's just being influenced by bands such as BYB,Social Distortion,Wildhearts. Thought i'd just share my latest work.

Through hell and back but i'm still believin'
partied with angels danced with the demons,
searching for something pure and true thats not like me.

spending a life engulfed in a shadow,
thoughts remain deep emotions run shallow,
gimme some piece of mind or else just leave me be

some people spend almost a whole lifetime,
waiting to catch a glimpse of that sunshine,
nothin' but stormy weather inside their memories,

All turning bad despite good intentions,
sometimes we need to switch up perception,
something to blur the line between myself and me

    Just - Like Novacaine
Come into my world and help ease the pain
    You - My Novacaine
Just one dose and i'm alive again

I'm not a songwriter but I would approach it the same way I'd come up with a story. Think about something to write about and start jotting down what comes to mind. Think about rhyming schemes if you're using that too.
  • iniAbasi inwang Jan 19, 2012 @ 11:34 am | delete
nah its not just about that alone, there are sveral others that we tend to overlook cuz its seems so insignificant.if only we can always sit back and think, observe the people around us,we can always know that there's no limit to the songs we can actually write or sing.

Believe it or not, I once won a Honorable Mention in Billboard's Annual Songwriting Contest. Never got one recorded though... But I haven't given up yet! I love writing. Thinking of taking the latest song I've written and posting it on Youtube and getting an account at one of those sites where you pay something like $1 per download. One of my friends here on Squidoo keeps after me to do that! :) Maybe in 2012! You've inspired me! :) Hugs, Kath

the cold wind burning the tracks of your tears

This is excellent. You start off writing lyrics in a similar way you start to write a story or a lens.
Hearing the music as you write, again similar to what I hear when I write a story or lens.

Is this all we want to hear,
Songs of Love, Joy, Anger, and Fear,
How about songs that move us to share
how we can reach out and care?
    Find our wings
    And let our voices sing!
    Find some ways
    to mark our days
    That will leave our face
    And a trace
Of love for others to find
And to share this joy of mine!

Great lense! I had fun helping with the song! Great exercise! B : )

I like the songwriting tips. The only thing I might add though would be that when you sit down and have writer's block when writing a song, you may want to rhyme the free flow of words that you start jotting down. Everything from end rhyme to slant rhyme and everything in between. This will help with destroying the writer's block, as well as possibly give you rhymes that you may not use for this particular song, but possibly for another one later on. It is always good to keep some sort of rhyme or pentameter going when writing for music though. Just a thought! Good stuff man! Thanks! I've got a songwriting blog as well. Feel free to check it out and offer any feedback. I would much appreciate it! Take care!

You're right; anyone can write songs. The trick is to write songs that engage an audience. Songs that tell stories or relate personal experiences have always been popular.

How do you know if the melody that comes to you is new or something you've heard in the distant past? Fascinated at how people write music. I play, I don't write (music) generally.

Many years ago I wrote a romantic song. And just like you mentioned in your lens, I found myself humming my own melody that fit with the lyrics. But I never did anything with it as I guess we need the right connections with someone in the business to try to sell it to a professional singer.

I guess no one is adding to your song
But I'm sure you'll finish it yourself before long.

Whenever I try to write lyrics I feel like I need a tune behind it. But I can't seem to write a tune without knowing the sentances that will form round it! Do you tend to write the tune or lyrics first? or indeed both at the same time?
  • Eric Jun 11, 2011 @ 9:16 pm | delete
I tend to write the tune first. I just go on my piano and play bunch of random notes until I hear something that sounds nice. I try to emulate whatever I just played, and when I get something I like, I write lyrics to it!
  • aerome Dec 17, 2010 @ 3:44 pm | delete

  • THELYRICSWRITER Oct 11, 2010 @ 3:05 pm | delete
@redyellowblue You don't always have to make a song rhyme. The thing is to just write. then write some more. Eventually you will see how it comes together.
  • athena Nov 20, 2010 @ 3:47 pm | delete
ok here you see i was looking somwhere where you can write your lyrics do you know where i can find that? not to affend your website or anything
  • THELYRICSWRITER Oct 11, 2010 @ 3:04 pm | delete
@andysays People have different ways of writing songs. Sometimes it's the lyrics that come first and other times it's the music. For me it's a mix of both. Sometimes I would think of a catch title and then write around that..
  • redyellowblue Oct 5, 2010 @ 2:23 pm | delete
I always wanted to know how to write lyrics, it seems so hard and like you always have to make them rhyme.
  • andysays Oct 1, 2010 @ 1:08 pm | delete
Do people start with the music and build the lyrics from there or do lyrics come easier?

I definitely find the music easier to come by

I find a short melodic phrase often gets me in gear to write a full song. I write musicals/musical theatre songs, so having that catchy chorus or even piece of a verse can often be the key to an unexpected show-stealer!
  • THELYRICSWRITER Oct 11, 2010 @ 3:06 pm | delete
Spot on there. I do the same from time to time. Makes it a lot easier.

Very nice. I usually try with the melody first then lyrics but everyones got their own ways right?!

I was having a hard time and found www.HowToWriteAGreatSong.com which has some videos about the "songwriting formula" used in the mainstream music industry. It's pretty interesting.

free your mind. and let the words go wild.
dont cage up anything. emotions come and go so quickly
that a great lyric could be forgotten b/c of the lack of recording it on ink/txt

I've been playing guitar for a while now and I've been trying to write interesting melodies and instrumental pieces, you know, that carry themselves without lyrics... but because of the encouragement and influence of those around me, I've become very interested in turning my latest song idea into something with words behind it. I started searching a bit around on the internet and found some vague guides full of cliches and restrictions, limitations, and boundaries. People trying to tell me, MAKE IT SMOOTH!, MAKE IT RHYME!, IT'S GOT TO FIT INTO 3 MINUTES! MAKE IT CONCISE!...
This page has been so much more help than anything else I've found. It takes the idea of songwriting and lyrics seriously and gave me some good food for thought on how to turn my latest creation into something more... fullfilling..... thank you for this lens.... I will be back on here after I get home from school to try and concentrate on ideas and progress.

in flanders field the poppies blow
between the crosses row and row
that mark our places and in the sky
the larks still bravely singing fly
scarce heard admist the guns below we are the dead short days ago we live felt dawn saw sunset glow loved and were loved now we lye in flanders field
