Why Write College Scholarship Essays
College Scholarship Essays - 3 Reasons You Have to Write
Writing college scholarship essays may seem useless - until you understand why the scholarship committee needs them. This article will help you lower your stress and see the bigger picture. Why write scholarships essays? Scholarships require essays for three simple reasons. As you can see below, the reasons are fairly straightforward:
1. Your Literacy. The scholarship committee wants to award money to someone literate and educated - to a point. You don't have to be able to write like Jane Austen or Earnest Hemingway to get a scholarship. But writing a solid essay shows you can communicate and benefit from more education.
2. Their Values. You will write what you think and what you believe, for the most part. You essay will pass on your values, and the scholarship committee will see those. For private scholarships, values can be important. The scholarship may be an effort to further a mission or reward certain ideas. If you align with that mission statement, you stand a better chance of receiving the scholarship.
3. Your Character. You convey your personality in your essay, and show some of yourself. When you receive a private scholarship, your name always goes on their list of recipients. By conveying good character, you will give them some assurance that you will reflect well on them in the future. For example, can you name a Rhodes Scholar?
By showing the scholarship committee who you are in your college scholarship essay, and I mean the best side of you, the committee can get a sense of what you will do in life and if they will be assisting you toward a good end, a worthy goal.
A couple of other pointers: You want your essay to flow well. Look up essay samples to become familiar with winning essays. Have others, such as teachers, and friends, proofread your essays to catch errors in grammar, spelling, word use, and style.
Last and most important: Apply. No one will criticize you for applying for more scholarships. Take a few moments to evaluate if you qualify, and if you do, go ahead and apply. Some one should have that scholarship and get money for college, why not you?
